[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] you build up hope, but failure's all you've known his cell phone blasted through the silence that had taken over his small apartment, through the haze that had sunk over him as he tried desperately to get some sleep. he had just completed an eighteen hour shift and he was not supposed to be on call. he had twenty hours to sleep his way through and this was not a part of the plan. his canine companion, berkley, shifted beside him, grunting as maddox leaned over the beast to grab the blasted device. he wanted to chuck it across the room. it was three in the morning and he had been on the cusp of sleep. and now that was all out the window and he was extremely irritated. it took him forever to fall asleep but tonight had been a different story. he had only been in bed for a half an hour.
someone was going to pay for this interruption.
however, it took maddox too long to answer the phone and as he flipped it open, he spoke into a dial tone. "hello? oh for fuck's sake." he snapped maliciously, wishing whoever had called him could hear him right now. his phone simply chirped in response and he wanted to smash it for its apparent positivity. grumbling about the cell phone's alert, he looked at the text message that flashed across the screen. there was a shooting at the university. groaning to himself he knew that he would have no choice but to go in. stupid college kids. they had too much time on their hands so they went out and partied hard, and then paid for it with their lives sometimes. shaking his head as he thought more into the situation, he wondered what could have happened. bar fights were a normal thing around the campus, but when had guns become a part of this? he really hoped that the irish mob had nothing to do with this. he wasn't going to be involved in a crime that had to do with kids.
sighing to himself, he sent a responding text message to his partner rhett, letting him know he'd be there soon. pushing himself out of bed, he labeled his german shepherd partner as lazy, for the dog didn't even move a muscle. he was great at his job but when it came to sleep, the dog was addicted. shaking his head, maddox pulled on the black pair of pants he had on before coming to bed, shoving his head through the neck opening of a clean white tee after applying deodorant. still mumbling to himself, he clipped his belt into place, holstering his gun and other equipment, then pulled the black button up shirt on and tucked it in rather haphazardly. what did they expect, really? shoving his black boots on, he whistled for berkley and made his way quickly down the stairs and to his cruiser parked out front.
getting in after letting berkley in the back, he started the car and blasted the heat, for it was rather cold outside and he was still waking up. peeling out of the parking spot, he followed the directions to the crime scene and parked outside of the yellow caution tape. seeing rhett up ahead, maddox grabbed berk's leash and was soon making his way towards him crankily. "you really couldn't handle this by yourself? ....wait, who am I kidding, of course you can't." rhett was really the only one who could handle maddox and his attitude, so the two worked well together. berkley sat down at their feet, forever the loyal member. things were going to get interesting he supposed. "so what happened exactly? just your regular bar brawl gone bad? stupid kids." words: ### - tags: open - outfit: link |

He had been excited at the prospect of actually being able to sleep for the next two days that was for sure. But before he was even able to go home, it had been declared that he still had unfinished paperwork that needed to be done. It had been a nonstop work week, covering for others out of persuasion and spending every waken moment looking into a kidnapping case. Rhett was even beginning to feel bad for not being around his labador, Taxi, due to the long hours he spent at work and the few he spent at home. But sleep was the only motivation he had to get all of the work finished and done by the weekend. His head began to falter, and his eyes were slowly drifting shut. His boss wasn’t even in the building at three am, but apparently, he was forced to be here. At least he was getting paid overtime, something that would assist him with his drinking binge over the weekend.
But then his goddamn cell phone went off.
With a grunt, Rhett answered, his voice laced with annoyance and sleep. ”Who the fuck is this?” he snapped, leaning back in the uncomfortable chair as he rubbed his eyes. When the person finished speaking, he grunted once more before hanging his phone up in annoyance. Thank god he wasn’t in college anymore, or else every single person that woke him up during the night with screaming and gun shots would be put to rest, literally. He needed his sleep, something that had been evident even during his college years. More than one fight had broken out with him involved due to the fact that people had been screaming outside his dorm building at four in the morning. Standing up, Rhett shut his laptop before grabbing his discarded jacket and gloves. He shoved his badge and gun into his belt loops before grabbing his keys and making his way out of the empty building. At least he had completed one of the reports; the others would either be for later or for when he really got pissed at his partner. That happened more often than not, but somehow, amidst all of the yelling and fighting, he still ended up writing everything.
He was the first on the scene, due to the fact that he was evidently closer and quicker than Maddox, no surprise there. A teenage girl was sobbing in the corner and Rhett sighed, rubbing his eyes. He hated dealing with sobbing people, especially women. At least mothers could shut up, girlfriend and bystanders were normally of no help and usually drove him insane. Once the teenager saw him, however, she ran over and continued sobbing about how there was a fight, a gun, and then a boom. She threw herself into his arms and Rhett awkwardly looked around. Not one of her friends was offering to remove her from his area, and he sighed. He hated teenagers more than anything and was planning on never reproducing. Hell, if there was another person like him in the universe, people would be screwed. Most people could barely handle him on a bad day; imagine if there were two of him.
The annoyed voice of his partner allowed Rhett to remove himself from the grasp of the blond crying girl. As soon as she was out of his grasp, one of the EMT’s took her away and Rhett sighed in relief. ”At least I’m here getting statements and not sleeping in an alcoholic induced coma,” he responded, his voice laced with annoyance. While he was the only one that could deal with Maddox, and Maddox was the only one that could deal with him, it did not mean he wanted attitude right now. Rhett scratched Berkley’s head and turned to his partner. ”Haven’t seen the body yet, but from the blond Barbie that was sobbing, there was a fight. There has to be something besides that though, because not all teenagers carry around guns.” he stated the facts before glancing at the yellow tape. ”I’m tired of this waking up at three am bullshit. There has to be other people that could do this shit.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] you build up hope, but failure's all you've known maddox was irritable because he was tired of getting the short end of the stick when it came to this whole police officer thing. it seemed that his parent and he were always given the grunt work that no one else wanted to deal with. that was why they had been awake for more then eighteen hours straight. the kidnapping case that they had been assigned had absolutely no leads and they were chasing empty promises around the area of boston. their search had of course extended outside of boston but so far they were turning up with nothing and that scared the both of them no matter how tough they were. a kidnapping case wasn't too promising after the first forty eight hours. they both knew that, they were both engrained with that knowledge. the stress of that case plus the stress of no sleep was getting to them both, and more so to maddox as he tried to figure out how to plant evidence for the irish mafia next.
he was tired of being a slave to the mafia. while he wasn't a good person by any means, he truly hated the job that he did for connor selwyn and his monsters. he had killed more people than he would ever want to admit openly because of his sale to the mafia by his father when he was young. it had been a lifelong sentence of servitude ever since then. he was even more in connor's debt because the man had paid for maddox to go to the academy. they said he would be a good asset if he did something useful, like join the police force. sighing softly, he looked down at his faithful canine work partner and realized just how fucked up he really was, how fucked up what he was doing was. shaking those thoughts from his mind as he stood beside his partner in the cold, he eyed rhett in aggravation at his first words. "fuck you woodward. you know i don't drink." it was true.
maddox york had his vices, but alcohol was not one of them.
shaking his head in irritation now, he glanced around the scene before him, looking at the body bag in front of them as the medical coroners gathered the rest of what they needed in order to take two bodies back to autopsy. those were more reports that they had to go over and he wasn't looking forward to it. crossing his arms over his chest with the dog's leash still in his hand, he glanced to rhett as he heard him speak again. "well lets go look at the other body before they tag it and bag it man." he knew that he couldn't be an asshole to rhett right now. the faster they worked together, the faster they could get home. "where's the gun?" he asked one of the crime scene investigators and he saw them hold up a plastic bag. taking it carefully in his hands, he sighed. "serial number's been scraped off but it's your regular run of the mill nine mil. could have gotten it anywhere. hopefully the prints turn up more leads."
rhett and maddox weren't the nicest cops but they were good at what they did. however, when empty ends turned up like that it wasn't something that either of them appreciated, especially at this time of the morning. looking to berkley now, he spoke up. "did the coroner estimate a time of death?"
it was then that all hell broke loose and it was at this moment that maddox wished the news wouldn't report things so quickly. it made him extremely irritated, especially when it involved mothers. the woman was grabbing him so quickly that he felt like he was being hit by a truck. "ma'am, listen...i know you're upset but you've got to let go or you'll be charged with assaulting a police officer. go." he all but snapped, not liking the feeling of being shaken like a rag doll as she blubbered disgustingly all over him. scrunching his nose in disgust, he peeled himself away from her and stepped to rhett. "this is ridiculous. we need to find some lackies, man. where do you want to start with this?" berkley had now laid down where he was told, sitting there until there was something to do. he was a vital part to their team so maddox was sure to keep him around, and close by. you never knew when a suspect would bolt if they're too close. words: ### - tags: open - outfit: link |

Rhett rolled his eyes. ”Never know when there’ll be a first,” he grumbled, wishing that he had enough will power not to drink. Yes, he had vices, but drinking was the only thing to seem to help him forget the agony he was faced with. He hated seeing the faces of people who knew that they would never see their children again, or never hold their loved ones again. It was something, no matter how bitter he was, he would never wish upon anyone. There was never a chance to say goodbye, apologize for all the wrongdoings that had occurred before the event. Simply, death caused more regret then remorse, and most people never realized that. People were said for death, but usually sadder that there had never been a chance to change the past. That was something he was all too familiar with.
Annabella had been gone in a split second, something that Rhett would never be able to fix. People accused him of being obsessed with a case that was long closed, but it was his sister. There was a part of him that wanted to be able to find her and hold her and apologize for all the mistakes he had made over his life. It was a daydream, but it was still something he deemed possible. The police had never found her body, never found the kidnapper, and to Rhett, he believed that they should have tried harder. His poor excuse for a mother had made sure they were distracted, by sleeping with the detective on the case, and that was when Rhett gave up on life. His emotions were turned off, simply shut down and refused to ever bloom again. Only one other person knew what it was like, and that was his father, who had become the only person in the entire world that Rhett could count on. They had a bond, and Rhett would call and not have to pretend that everything was alright. There was no lying between the two.
Without saying a word, Rhett took the camera out of the bag he brought and knelt down where the bodies were. The two bodies, both male, were in terrible shape and he quickly snapped a couple of shots. Most of the medical examiners grunted in annoyance that he was ruining their chances of going home, but he couldn’t help it. He had a job to finish, and if they had a problem they could take it up with his boss. He was damn good at what he did, as was Maddox, but that didn’t mean people could be assholes to them. It simply meant that they could be assholes to everyone else. After finishing the pictures, he nodded at the medical examiners and they began to remove the body from the scene. His eyes scanned the large group gathering around the yellow police tape and he sighed, before making his way back to Maddox. The gun was in his hand and he leaned close, confirming the number’s being scraped off.
Clearing his throat, he looked at Maddox. ”About two thirty tonight. Gunshot were heard, the neighbor and a girlfriend came running out and saw blood. Cops got here about two forty five and called us. Obviously there was foul play, and I took some pictures for later,” he sighed ”You think it’s the mafia again?”
A news crew appeared out of nowhere, microphones edging their way towards the police tape. Rhett groaned and looked towards Maddox, who was dealing with a mother. Fuck. ”We are not releasing any names or information at this time. Please refrain from asking questions or you will be facing a law suit,” he barked at the groups before sighing when they simply pressed closer. He made his way over to Maddox, and sighed as the mother continued to blubber. Jesus. ”Or at least hire someone to be a distraction,” he responded with, his voice laces with annoyance. ”I interviewed the girlfriend before you got here. She said the three of them left the club about one, and then the guys got a phone call. Idiot one and two came out started talking to a tall guy with dark hair and that was the last thing she saw before the gunshots.” he sighed. ”From the looks of it, the two guys were familiar with the stranger. If we knew where their phones were we could look at received phone calls.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width: 350px; padding: 10px; background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/w6MZf.png);] you build up hope, but failure's all you've known he was completely exhausted and spent, which made him incredibly cranky and volatile. he knew that rhett was as equally as tired as he was and when they were both together in this state, it wasn't exactly nice to deal with. he would have felt bad for anyone that crossed them if he had a heart. but since he was lacking in that department, he honestly could care less. he also understood that rhett had very little concern when it came to certain people involved in a case. of course, it was always hard to talk to the families of the deceased, but it was part of the job. maddox usually took over that part of the case to make things easier for rhett.
it was why he made him do the paperwork. it worked out for them both in his opinion, and who was he to complain? he didn't even think that rhett stayed up to do the paperwork for the next day or he'd honestly be helping him. he knew what it was like to miss out on sleep. they both did. and they were usually understanding about it since they were actually really good partners. the chief had finally paired them up a year ago because no one else could take their asshole attitudes, and it had been a match made in heaven. they could insult one another all they wanted and it was fine because it would just bounce off of the both of them. and outside of work they could actually do things together, which was nice. maddox actually had a friend in woodward, and he appreciated him even though he would never admit it.
shaking those useless thoughts from his head, he listened to rhett as the man took out his camera and started photographing the evidence of one of the bodies. that was when he himself was bombarded by a mother, and after talking her off the ledge, he had one of the other police officers remove her from the scene. "ridiculous, really. i can't take the drama rhett." he admitted in frustration, obviously exhausted and cranky. it was then that rhett started going over details of the case and maddox sighed audibly. "i don't know what else it could be, man. this is by the book in their world. kill off some people by making it look like an escalated bar fight? not to mention all of the other mafia cases had guns with the numbers scraped off. guns just like this." he said, furrowing his brow. maddox's specialty was the mob, considering what his real story was. but no one knew that, not even rhett. he was sure even the man he considered to be his good friend would rat him out and write him off instantly. he couldn't lose the only person he had in his life.
just as rhett was explaining things, maddox suddenly heard berkley whine, which was a tell tale sign that something was up. seeing the german shepherd tense on the ground, he grabbed rhett's arm silently, twisting him around to where berk was staring. while they didn't know how dangerous things could be, he knew that berkley would have a much better chance in taking down a perp than either one of them right now. it was then that a shadowy form came bursting out of the bar behind the scene and maddox acted quickly. "sook!" the german command hit his mouth quickly, and he sent his dog galloping after the suspect. maddox knew that he didn't have to tell rhett twice, and he himself took off after the runner, holstering his gun for the time being so that he could propel himself forward. berkley was going to take the man down long before rhett and maddox could even get to him and he thanked his dog for his speed and intelligence in this moment.
