[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, background-color:#f4f4f4; width:400px; padding:8px; border: 8px solid #9b6464;] she was just a girl SHE EXPECTED THE WORLD BUT IT FLEW AWAY FROM HER REACH
Thankfully, she was a cop, or she would have long ago been pulled over for speeding. Pushing her tangled blond hair out of her face, she hastily peered at herself in the rearview mirror as she came to a halty stop in the airport parking garage. Thankful once more for the fact that she'd fixed her make-up very simply the morning before, she touched up her glistening lips and ran her fingers through her hair. Readjusting her tanktop, she straightened her necklace and resolved she was presentable enough to step out in public.
As long as she didn't look like she was doing a walk of shame through the airport, then she didn't care.
That was the only drawback to spending the night with Nixon: she'd completely forgotten she was supposed to pick her twin brother up from the airport this morning. His text asking her, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU? had jolted her out of bed with little to no explanation to Nixon other than the plain fact that she was picking up a relative from the airport. She didn't imagine he'd been terribly pleased that she'd run out so quickly, and since their relationship was still so strained in the trust department, she hoped he would actually believe her. But she found herself unsure about whether she should tell Nixon about her brother or not. In the bright sunlight of the morning after, her brain reminded her he was a criminal. But he was her boyfriend, and she cared about him far more than she should.
Sighing exhaustedly, she shoved through the doors into the airport and headed for Leo's luggage arrival. She knew her brother well enough to know he'd be pissed that he had to wait, but he would also never take it out on her even if it was her fault. While he may be like a bull to everyone else, he was always gentle with her, and she considered him her other half. He was her best friend, and she'd missed him while they'd been apart. She wanted to gush over Nixon, but this was another area she was unsure of the boundaries. Out of all the people in the world she could confide in, Leo would be it, but how could she explain the delicate balance of Nixon and her job? Or the fact that pious little Scout had become the biggest hypocrite on the face of the earth?
She hated lying to Leo, and she refused to do so. She would simply have to steer clear of the subject if at all possible.
Feeling as if every eye in the airport saw her and instantly knew she'd had sex and slept over at her boyfriend's house without so much as a change of clothes, she cleared her throat and stuffed her hands into her jean shorts as she arrived at the luggage claim. Glancing around, she looked for his familiar head of brown hair - so unlike hers since they were fraternal twins - and she saw him almost instantly. Joy rushed through her, and she smiled broadly as she rushed toward him.
"Leo!" she cried ecstatically, throwing herself at him in a bear hug, "I'm so sorry you had to wait; I've missed you! How was your trip?" She avoided the explanation of why she'd been late, but she knew he would bring it up. She'd just have to invent some excuse. tagged !

That's where I've been and nothing's changed. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - His eyes flicked to his watch for what seemed like the hundredth time in the past half hour. Where in the world was his sister? He had called her at least ten times after she was over twenty minutes late, for a part of him was really starting to worry. She was never late. Hell, she was normally always early. It wasn't like her to forget either, so thoughts were passing through his mind a mile a minute. What if something had happened to her? What if she was hurt? Maybe it had something to do with her job, for he knew that she couldn't control when she had a case. However, if she was going to be late she usually sent him a text message. Furrowing his brow now, he sighed softly to himself and looked over to where he was waiting for his baggage. He didn't have much with him. It simply consisted of the back pack he had packed to go across the world. It had been done on a whim, and he had been gone for two months. But he had seen everything and done everything and he felt, for the first time in a long time, happy and at ease.
He was not a stationary person. He had never been able to sit still ever since he was little, and staying in one place for too long could drive him nearly crazy if he wasn't careful. So when this opportunity to go backpacking across Europe was brought to his attention, he had jumped on it. Of course he had missed his sister, but he had plenty of souvenirs for her. Except now he didn't really feel like giving her anything because she couldn't remember to pick up her fraternal twin brother at the airport.
Huffing in his annoyance, his wandering attention caught sight of a rather good looking brunette to his right. She made eye contact with him, and he could see the shy smile, followed by the blush heating up her cheeks. A charming grin worked its way onto his features and he figured that there was no reason he couldn't talk to her. Scout was obviously not showing up anytime soon, and if another hour went by, he would just call a cab. So right now, he could do whatever he wanted. Pushing himself up from the bench he had been slouched on, he made his way to the baggage belt and found his backpack before shouldering it quickly. She was still waiting for her bags it seemed, and he wondered why he hadn't taken notice of her on the plane. He sidled over to her craftily enough, standing slightly behind her, but not close enough to make her feel threatened. "These baggage things. Take all freakin' day." He said to strike up a friendly conversation, and he could read the smile on her face before she even turned to look at him.
"I know! I feel like I've been waiting here for twenty minutes!" She giggled and admitted to him, causing him to smile. "Well, listen. My ride's not here, and I'm fairly certain you aren't supposed to wait that long for your luggage, so how about I go buy you a cup of coffee and we can lodge a complaint?" He never claimed to not be forward, but she seemed to like his style, for she was agreeing to his offer without hesitation. Grinning with victory, Leo walked with her to the coffee shop, and twenty minutes later he had a phone number stored, name already forgotten. Lying and telling her his ride was here, he thanked her for having coffee with him and grabbed a newspaper on his way out of the shop. As he was rounding the corner, he was suddenly assaulted by a mop of blonde hair. Blinking in surprise, he quickly realized who it was, and while he was still irritated, he was more than happy to see her. Picking her up a little in the bear hug he returned, he laughed shortly and put her down, releasing her and fixing her with a playful glare as she questioned him.
Looking down at his watch pointedly, he suddenly shoved it in her face. "Excuse me, but did you forget how to tell time? I've been dying here." He teased her as meanly as he could but she would know he couldn't be mad at her. Sighing in defeat, he spoke up with a wild smile. "My trip was amazing! I have a ton of pictures. And stories. And phone numbers. It was great." He said with a grin, and then remembered the newspaper in his hands. Unfolding it, he spoke up quickly. "So how are you? What have I missed in the world of Scout? How are you? Anything..." However, his words were cut off as she suddenly tried grabbing the newspaper from his fingers. It was a good thing he had a strong hold on it, for she only succeeded in ripping the front page.
"Uh, rude. I'm reading here beyotch."
He informed her snarkily, knowing she was hiding something from the protests she was putting him. Turning his back to her so she had a harder time trying to get at the newspaper, he flipped the pages quickly, but realized what he wanted was on the front page. His sister's face. His sister. Wrapped around some MAN? What in the world? He turned back to her in wonder, watching her, then looking to the paper, then looking to her, then back to the paper, and finally to her. "Ohhhhhh. You got some 'splainin' to do." |

She felt so much relief and happiness to be in her brother's arms, she couldn't manage any response to his teasing when he first placed her back on her feet. She had missed him dearly - this other half of herself - but she knew by the pallor of his skin and the light in his eyes that he'd had a great trip. Thankfully, he didn't linger on her untimely manner, and he poured right in to beaming about his trek. When he mentioned the phone numbers he'd accumulated, she giggled and took on of his bags from him, throwing the strap on over her blond head so the weight was evenly balanced across her back. "Have you even bothered to call any of them back?" she teased, elbowing him. Her brother's inability to commit was so similar to her own, yet for an entirely different reason. She imagined that his stemmed from his faulty relationship with their father, but she'd never bothered to ask. There were some things that went unsaid even between twins as close as they were.
He began questioning her about her boring life (well, perhaps not as boring as usual considering her recent circumstances), and she sighed, feigning exasperation as she glanced over at him. Realizing he was unfolding his newspaper, she leapt at him frantically, crushing the paper with her hand and then smiling innocently up at him. Unfortunately, despite the fact they were twins, Leo had inherited all of the height.
"There's never anything good in the newspaper nowadays anyway. It's a ton of boring, depressing crap that no one really wants to know. You should probably just return it and get your fifty cents back, to be honest." She shrugged noncommittally, but the move gave him the opportunity to spin away from her, easily picking up on the fact she was hiding something. Panicked that he would see the article about her and Nixon that was guaranteed to be one of the top stories in a town like this, she grabbed for the paper but he moved too fast. With his back to her, she couldn't reach around his wide upper body to grab the paper, and she heard him shuffling through it to find what she was hiding.
"Leo! I'm serious. There's nothing in there. I don't know why you're making such a big deal about this," she griped, trying to make herself sound nonchalant and failing miserably. She'd never been a public person about her relationships (the few that she'd had), but her 'relationship' with Nixon was definitely front page news. She heard Leo stop flipping and his back stiffened just before he spun to look at her, his mouth gaping in wonder.
Instantly, her cheeks turned red and she dropped her hands, knowing he'd already found it. She was able to see over it now, and she saw a blurry, yet recognizable image of herself sitting (more like straddling) in Nixon's lap kissing him with the harbor as a backdrop. Ironically, if the picture didn't mean the loss of her job and the possible dissolving of her already-fragile relationship with Nixon, it was a great image. The photographer had done a marvelous job framing them with the water glistening in the background. The bold title across the front of the page read in all capital letters: "AFTER CIVIL DISPUTE, NIXON GREY MAKES UP - AND MAKES OUT - WITH MYSTERIOUS LADY".
Ugh.
"No," she stated firmly, her eyes flashing testily up at her brother, "No, I don't."
Crossing her arms over her chest, she huffed indignantly and tried to ignore him, but she knew she couldn't. He had always been more melodramatic than her, and honestly, she was excited about what had happened with Nixon and she couldn't keep it from him.
"Okay, okay, fine. His name is Nixon Grey, and he's... I don't know! It's complicated, and I'm not going to stand here gushing about it to you in the middle of the airport," she snapped, her tone playfully disgruntled. "Besides the idiot reporters, it's just between us. No one at work even knows, and if you so much as breathe a word... I will kill you." Her blue eyes flashed threateningly, but she could never hold a threat against her brother. She loved him like a part of herself, and his playful demeanor disabled her from remaining mad at him. tagged !
