her father, aidan daly, was one of the members of the council for the ira, a powerful and austere man, and her mother, quinn mcloughlin, was a fiesty redhead with a temper and an opinion. already having four children when willow was born, her parents didn't coddle her, but she quickly became her daddy's little girl. he made sure to buy her the best toys and clothes and get her the best teachers and schools. being a leader of the ira afforded daly many luxuries, and he lavished them on his baby girl. four years younger than her next oldest sibling, willow was very much the baby of the family. her older siblings managed not to be jealous of her for getting so much of their father's doting affection, since the difference in their ages and maturity kept them above such things. her oldest brother, carlyle, was 14 when she was born. after him was her brother bradan (12), sister darcy (9), brother seamus (7), and brother tierney (4). darcy had always been their mother's little girl and willow easily stepped into position as aidan's prized daughter. as the years went on and willow's budding personality and natural beauty grew, darcy grew increasingly jealous of her and the two girls had a mutual dislike. why were her parents' last names different you ask? when aidan and quinn married, aidan was already nineteen (marrying a minor who was sixteen at the time). initially, quinn took his surname, but when he grew in power through the ira and became one of the council members, he had his wife change her last name back to her maiden name to protect the children from people who would wish to hurt them because of who their father was. quinn got pregnant with carlyle on their honeymoon, and the oldest boy took his mother's last name, and so on through all of their children. unable to keep his sons out of the fraternity that was the ira, aidan did everything in his power to keep his daughters out of it. darcy knew some simply because she was older, but willow was kept completely out of the loop (much to darcy's pleasure, believing she knew something her younger sister didn't for once). willow was his prized trophy, his little porcelain doll, and she was always led to believe her father worked for the government and couldn't tell them anything about his job because it was all top secret. in essence, this was true, but she would never receive the full truth and would carry out her existence in guileless ignorance. when willow was six years old was when things for the family began to go downhill. for a few years, her father had been aligning himself with the irish mafia, attempting to bring them in to the ira and make the ultimate alliance between ireland's underground powerhouses. he was an ambassador of sorts between the two entities, but it all went awry when the council decided, without him, to murder the byrnes in an attempt to threaten and bully the selwyn family into obeying. the mafia instantly withdrew any consideration of an alliance and attacks on the ira went on for months as the selwyns retaliated against their near-allies. angered by the ira working behind his back, as well as losing a well-worked for alliance, aidan became a dark man. he began beating his wife and drinking heavily. carlyle and bradan had already moved out and didn't realize what their father was doing. darcy was the oldest child still at home, but being a female got her no respect with her father. when she tried to stand up to him one night, telling him to stop hitting their mother, he slapped her until she was almost unconscious and then raped her. willow witnessed the whole thing. never having seen her sweet, loving father do such a horrendous thing, her young brain couldn't comprehend what was going on. realizing that willow had seen, aidan approached her in one of his sober moments and explained to her that sometimes he had to do things to keep her sister and mother in line that didn't seem right at the time but were necessary. already having a rivalry with her older sister, willow innocently listened to her father's twisted explanation and believed him. ignorant to right and wrong, she dismissed the horrors as 'what needed to be done'. her two brothers remaining at home began getting bad grades at school and became violent from what was going on at home. darcy closed up, no longer talked, and ran straight into her bedroom whenever she actually came home. on the nights when she couldn't stand it, she stayed with one of her older brothers or with a friend. often, on those nights when she did brave her family's home, her father would beat and rape her again: punishing her for 'abandoning her family'. this went on for a few years before the older boys finally found out what was going on. once they did, they came to the family home and cornered their father: now such a drunk that he was overweight, unkempt, and out of shape. they beat him senseless and took their mother, darcy, and brothers. they tried to force willow out with them as well, but she was so warped from her father's lies and not knowing any better, that she refused to leave his side. knowing they couldn't linger any longer for fear the ira would show up and kill them for fighting with their father, the left their sister and considered her a lost cause. willow, eight years old at that time, spent an hour wetting a washcloth and gently wiping the blood from her incoherent father's face. she wept and sobbed but continued until his skin was clean, swollen and bruised but clean. when the council arrived, they picked up the young child and took her father to fix him up. she didn't see him for almost a week, and she was distraught. the council didn't take her to her mother - wanting, in their own twisted way, to keep this girl from the one parent in her life who had the sense to get away from the ira's corruption - but kept her in their headquarters while her father healed. she continued to go to school and she began to forget about the horrible night. she became so good at suppressing the truth and the horror that was her life, she didn't even choose to remember what went on at the ira while she lived there. she didn't see the crime they condoned or the murders they committed. all she saw was the 'necessary' evil they had to enact to keep her world fluffy and bright and all of those shallow things her father had instilled in her as 'values'. aidan daly cleaned up his act - was forced to sober up and get back into shape - but his darkness never went away. he became brutal, taking over the militaristic side of the ira and hunting down the mafia members who had attacked after the falling out. he no longer felt any sympathy or remorse for the murder of the byrnes who had been his friends, and instead tracked the selwyn family all the way to california. he tried everything he could to get to kyson selwyn, but he was always one step behind. finally, when he'd almost caught the bastard, kyson died in an earthquake: at the hands of his own oldest son, connor. aidan was outraged and took it into his hands to take down the mafia once and for all. he planned and plotted with the council, and when connor's alliance with the russian mafia caved in on him, aidan ordered the young teagan breslin to sapphire bay, california to take over where connor had failed. teagan did as he was told, swooping in and taking over and ousting the selwyns completely. when they ran to boston, the ira followed, but this time aidan would be more clever. he asked his precious willow if she would enjoy going to college in the states. when she instantly jumped at the opportunity, her father transferred her to boston university, right in the heart of the city where his enemies lay. now, willow attends the college with no idea that her father is using her as his eyes and ears in the city. she is a bubbly young woman, having repressed all of the negative in her life, but surely it will surface at some point? |
