[/div] AND IGNITE YOUR BONES - - - - AND I WILL TRY TO FIX YOU it had been a long day, a day in which she had been forced to go home because she was wearing herself down. she had argued repeatedly with the chief, but he had given her no leniency. she was working herself much too hard and he would have none of that. so despite her fit, she was told to go home to get some rest, and he really wanted her to consider taking off the next day as well. to hell she would. she had way too much to do ever since saxton and she had been taken by the drug dealers. they both wanted to catch those dirtbags more than anyone else on the force and they weren't resting until it was done. sighing softly to herself, she saw the look that passed over the chief's face and she slumped a bit. "fine. fine, i will. but if things start falling behind or apart, can't say i didn't warn you sir." she fixed him with a stare and then escorted herself from the office.
it didn't take her very long to get home and when she walked through the doors, she couldn't be happier or more relieved. she was looking forward to the day off even though she put a brave face on at work. there was too much on her mind, too many things that worried her, that made her think the thoughts that she didn't really want to think. but in her exhaustion, she didn't realize that her top lock had been unlocked. she would have been on full alert in any normal situation, but as she let herself in, she just slumped up against the door and closed her eyes. dropping her bag on the table beside the door, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. a voice reached her ears suddenly, and automatically her ice turned to blood. the voice was right to her left, a whisper in the darkness, but a whisper that she could never forget. "did you miss me baby? i know i missed you." his voice was rough and harsh and no where near comforting. reaching to her belt, he felt him smack her hand away, lunging for the weapon himself and sending it flying across the room.
she lunged forward then, trying to make her escape to the kitchen area, as if that would be her savior but he caught her hard around the waist. 'hey, hey. don't fight baby. please. i just want to talk. and then we're going home. i won't punish you if you just come quietly." she wasn't going to go. she couldn't go. he was going to kill her first. her blood felt like fire in her veins and as she continued to struggle, a sudden cry left her lips, finally finding her voice. screaming out loud now, she clawed at his arms around her waist, hearing him curse in protest. but he let go of her and she scurried across the familiar layout of her home, her heart beat going a mile a minute. reaching for the container of knives that rested on the kitchen counter, she skirted down the hallway with him close at her heels. before she could blink, she was suddenly crashing to the ground, the knife skittering across the ground. "no!" she yelled in protest, her hands reaching for the weapon that would save her life. as he pulled at her feet, she kicked at him, making it difficult for him to get a handle on her. in the struggle, she managed to pull her phone from the pocket and she hit the number that she had last called. the police department. someone had to pick up her call. someone had to hear. as she heard a male voice on the other line, she screamed.
"help! help, it's sam! it's..." but she was silenced with a large hand over her mouth, and her husband cursed at her violently. "you stupid bitch!" not bothering to hang up the phone, he knew that he had to get out of here and fast. sam was still wiggling across the floor, and when her fingers finally enclsoed around the blade of the knife, her cry of pain was muffled because of the hand covering her mouth. the cold steel cut into her skin but she had no choice. pulling it towards her, she brought it around forcefully, catching him in the side of the arm with it. furious, her husband yelled out and then punched her square in the face, shattering her nose and making her see stars. he couldn't stay though. his blood would be too much evidence against him, and he stripped her of her clothes in that moment, deciding to have his way with her as well. he didn't finish because he didn't want to be discovered, but as sam fought and struggled against him, it only turned him on more. finally bringing his hand to grip her hair painfully, he looked her in the eye.
"you will be mine again." he snapped and then gathered her clothes and any other evidence there was. sam lay there, exhausted and spent, soiled and disgusted. not wanting to be found this way, she crawled to her bedroom, pulling on a pair of black sweatpants and a white tee shirt. still not feeling safe, she crawled out of the bedroom, the blood trail from her nose giving anyone coming an idea of where she was. taking the knife with her, she went inside, still on her hands and knees and locked the door. they could break it down for all she cared. once in, she clambered into the bathtub with the lights on, drawing the shower curtains with a bloody hand. and once there, she simply cried, pulling her knees against her chest and cradling the knife in her hand. she should have never left work. tagged .

in the daylight we'll be on our own For once, augustus would admit that he was way in over his head when it came to his new standing. He was chief of police and it was by no means an easy job. That was perhaps why it came with an impressive paycheck, but that was beside the point. The point made was that it was stressful, it came with long, sleepless nights and he forgot what his bed felt like. He hit the mattress and slept solid until the loud buzzing alarm rang off next to his head. He would then slowly emerge from the navy sea of sheets and comforter to return to work once again. That was what his routine in the morning, he didn’t have time for a bagel or coffee, he was glad his secretary made him a freshly brewed pot or else he’d go without the liquid gold in his system. What he needed was an assistant chief that was more of use, but he chose to sit by and chuckle at augustus struggling not to drown. The only thing he was truly thankful for was even if he was so green in comparison to a heavy portion of the force; he was man enough to do it where several never were.
With the title came the responsibility to look after his officers even when they weren’t making the best decisions for their own well being. That was how he was tipped off about one of his detective running themselves down to be burnt out for the job. While they held an important job, every one needed a break. Augustus would need one of his own soon, he was already overwhelmed, but he didn’t let it show on his features. He couldn’t very well advise this woman to take a break when he didn’t take his own advice. She was a beautiful woman, but naturally had a sharp tongue and the wit to support it. She had an impressive work ethic, percentage of cases solved to cases closed cold. She had a bright future ahead of her on the force, it all showed on paper. He didn’t want her to become what he was, because he was once that budding potential early on, too early. Now he was sitting behind a desk that he barely could manage and yet the most enlightening part of his day was sending an officer home for mandatory thirty six hours of resting.
“no, I will not deter from the final judgment. No officer is good to me if they’re tired and worn out. The cases will still be here tomorrow, little will change and what changes we have well rested officers working on them. You are working too hard and while we appreciate the efforts, we want you to rest. We cannot afford to lose a capable officer to depression, malnourishment, etcetera etcetera etcetera.” He scolded her, but his face was welcoming, friendly – he wasn’t mean or gruff at all. He was just a big man, a jolly green giant, if you will. He was intimidating, but to his department he was the same augustus he was before he received this title. He missed working on the floor with them, whereas now he sat away from them in a closed off office looking through blinds. He knew sam, knew how much of a clutz she was and how some of the me would crack jokes about making her their wives. Augustus would see to halt such comments, the last thing he needed was sexual harassment and discrimination lingering in the air, even if to the men it was as harmless.
He watched her leave and he shook his head. She would have been a wonderful lawyer, but he was glad to have her on the force. Settling back down in front of his computer, he read through documents that George had lined up for him. The legality of being a cop and the paperwork wasn’t his favored aspect of the job. He was there to save people when they needed him, but he wouldn’t step back down to be what he already surpassed. This was the top of the ladder at this job, he didn’t have anywhere else to move up to. It was a depressing thought that he would ever come to that point, so he shook it from his thoughts. Having enough of his office, he set out to patrol the rest of the department and found it completely empty minus the front end staff for walk-ins and the like. He meandered his way back to his office after pouring a freshly brewed mug of coffee. The rich flavor soothed him, made him feel bold, and it took the edge off the stress he was carrying. He wouldn’t allow himself to be a failure, but he couldn’t help but feel as if he was set up to fail.
The telephone on his desk jarred to life, ringing loudly against the empty room, creating an echo. Glancing at it, he set down his mug and answered the call. “Augustus Sawyer, Chief of Police speaking-“ he formally droned before stopping in his tracks at his words. He looked at the clock in a quick moment, she had hardly been home, an hour at best and she was in danger. Guilty lashed out at him, followed by an overwhelming need to pursue, switching the call to his cell phone, he searched its location with the gps in his dodge charger before speeding off to her. He couldn’t bare the idea of one of his officers being killed or hurt without him being there to help them. He flew faster than any plane could at the moment, traffic parting like the red sea as he barreled to her rescue. Kicking open her door, he bellowed “Boston PD!” to warn the perpetrator that he was there to take him down. His body cleared rooms quickly realizing that the man was gone. Panic filled his body, but following a trail of blood he found her in the tub.
She was in shock, clutching a knife as blood poured from her nose that the assailant shattered. Crouching, he gentled clasped her should as the other hand gently eased the knife out of her hand. A soft voice spoke to her “that’s it..” “easy does it..” “you’ll be just fine..” “I’m here for you..” Dropping the knife outside the tub, he looked for where she stored her towels. Calling in his team of professionals, he returned to her. “now, sam, I’m going to lift you out of this tub. We’re going to go to the hospital… your nose and other wounds need medical care.” His words were assertive as he told her what needed to be done. His strong arms surrounded her body easily, scooping her up and pressing her against him. His hands were carefully place and he moved quickly out of her home to place her in the car. He tilted her head back and applied pressure to her nose to stem the bleeding. She was quiet, but he knew that he could become overwhelming, he didn’t want to spiral her out of control. He just found himself repeating, “you’re going to be fine, everything will be alright. We’ll catch that bastard and throw him in jail – he’ll never do that to you or anyone else again.” tagged: sam - notes: sorry it took me so long and i hope this is ok! i'm like falling asleep over here, lol |

[/div] AND IGNITE YOUR BONES - - - - AND I WILL TRY TO FIX YOU she felt sick to her stomach. how had he found her? how had he managed to cross all of the way here from california? it didn't make sense to her. she had covered her tracks, she had changed her appearance. before she had been a girl with short brown hair, cut to frame her face and highlight her bright blue eyes. now she was thinner than she had ever been and her long locks were half fake. she needed them to be that way in order to change her appearance completely. she looked different, ten times different. her name was different...everything was different. it scared her that he had found her so easily and she wished that there was something else that she could do. she had changed bank accounts, she had changed everything to cash so that there was no paper trail and yet, he had still been able to discover her. trying to take a deep breath, she just erupted into tears all over again, unable to control herself like she normally could. her composure was shot.
managing a breath, she still sobbed into her hands, the knife cradled safely into one of them. keeping it pressed against her chest, she didn't move from the back of the bathtub even when she heard her front door busted open. while she remembered that she had called the police department, she cursed herself for it now, wishing she had just kept her mouth shut. if anyone found out that it was her husband who was doing this, she could ruin his successful law enforcement life. biting the inside of her lip, she swallowed past the blood that had gathered in her throat, feeling even more sick to her stomach, managing not to throw up, she flinched as the door to the bathroom cracked open. resisting the urge to scream, she held the knife in her hand tightly, clenching it in view as the shower curtain opened. gone was her courage, gone was her ability to fight back. she had been attacked by the very man who had held her heart in the past, and there was no hiding it this time. she couldn't pass it off as her falling because they had gotten the emergency call from her. hell, the call had gone straight to the chief of police. there was nothing she could do.
blindly, she looked at augustus as he swam in and out of focus in front of her. her cracked lips parted as she tried to desperately say something to him, but nothing would come. trying once more, she managed to murmur a slurred sentence, and it was obvious to anyone that she was in complete and utter shock. groaning as he tried to work the knife out of her hand, she clutched to it in vain, weakly succumbing to his efforts as he softened her with his gentle words. her body trembled, her shirt covered in blood from her nose, from the stab wound she had inflicted upon her husband, and it was obvious that she was not okay. closing her eyes tightly, she only managed to nod as he informed her that everything was okay, that everything would be okay. it wouldn't be. it never would be as long as that man was roaming free but she could never give him up. a small whimper left her mouth, thick sounding because of the blood. as he gently convinced her to drop the knife, she let it go, listening as it clattered to the bottom of her bathtub. not knowing what else to do, she felt him reach for her and she went willingly because she knew him.
in her opinion, men couldn't be trusted, but this was her boss. he wouldn't let anything happen to her, he was going to take care of her. "august, please." she whispered into his shoulder as he picked her small body up without much of an effort. while she remained rather limp in his arms, she didn't want anyone she knew to recognize her, so she turned her face into his shoulder, crying silent tears into his shirt as he hurried her down the stairs. clutching to the fabric of his clothes, she felt oddly safe in his arms.
when they reached his car, she allowed herself to be deposited into the passenger seat, feeling him strap her in. she didn't complain, and instead tried her best to stop the bleeding from her nose as he sat next to her. as he tilted her head back, she listlessly responded, managing to pinch the bridge of her nose despite the pain it caused her. "we can't go to the hospital." she informed him deliriously, the broken nose only the beginning of the concussion that was taking place in her mind as she sat next to him. she had to make him see. if they went to the hospital it meant that he would find her for sure, and she couldn't face that finality. fresh tears sprang to her eyes, and she nearly broke down in his passenger seat. and it was in that moment, that time of weakness that she let it all go. leaning forward despite the copious amount of blood coming from her nose, she confessed to him her inner, most darkest secret. "he's my husband!" she sobbed openly, losing what little composure she had left. tagged .

in the daylight we'll be on our own He told himself that he would have to miss the calls now that his job was had more demand for him to be everywhere and constantly available. Training himself to wake on first ring of his phone was difficult, but he was getting there from fifth ring to third the leap to first ring was obtainable and in sight. With his force out on the trail of cases, investigating, or patrolling he was the only one in the office minus the secretarial staff. With his phone ringing he was only expecting an update or for his presence to be requested down at yet another crime scene. Never would he have believed it would be the phone call of one of his detectives in danger. It flew caution to the window and he was barreling down on his way. This was his first phone call since the promotion where he had reason to go this fast in his new jet black charger and his mind traveled to this obtainable thought while moving quickly to sam. He couldn’t work himself over what was happening or dwell on it. As a person he felt terrible for not stressing, but as the chief it was his job.
Getting to her was time consuming, but he was there as fast as he could have been. There was an underlying thrill of speeding down a road and parting cars as you went. It made him feel powerful, but he did have some sort of power behind his actions and words. He was the chief; he just didn’t feel like it. He was waiting for the honeymoon period to fade away before he could feel more like the man he should feel for his job title. His parents complained he was married to his job and for the most part, they were right. He let go of or was dumped by women time after time because he had a lack thereof time itself. He wanted a woman who would understand that it was hard to place his job before them, but it was millions of people versus one woman sleeping next to him. It didn’t mean he wasn’t lonely, he felt a raw loneliness every time he slid into the cold bed, but he was a man who wouldn’t admit that. He couldn’t admit his own secret fear of being alone for the rest of his life.
His words were the only thing he could comfort her with as he worked the knife from her hand. She was clutching it as if it was her lifeline and perhaps a few minutes prior as he was barreling his way here, it was. She didn’t feel safe, she was in shock and he knew from experiences of being in shock that her head must be swimming. She need to feel safe and supported, he had to calm her down but more importantly he had to remove her from this bathtub and now traumatic environment. She weakened against his attempts and he knew it was only a matter of time. He lifted her from the tub and she became small against him. She was obviously smaller than him, as he was some sort of a giant, but she was small and scared. He was the only one who was there for her right now, the others following behind. She hid her face against his shoulder and he knew she didn’t want the force to know it was her. She didn’t want this to reflect on her good standing in the department. She was a very conscious woman; she didn’t want her pride to be ruined.
She was cooperative through her shock, allowing him to secure her into the seat and tip her head back in an attempt to stem the bleeding. He slid into his driver’s seat, from buckling his seat belt to flooring the car into motion, they were all brief seconds. ”yes, sam, you’re going to the hospital. They’re going to take care of you, clean you up; it’s going to be okay.” he reassured again, but she was listening, she was too far afraid and in shock. Luckily, the hospital was getting closer with each minute, he just had to keep her calm, but it was a difficult task when in motion. Then it was if she let go of the walls she had up and she told him something he knew was heavy.
It was her husband.
The fact that she was married was news to Augustus, but what fueled his anger even more was a man beating on a woman and torturing her this way. He knew in that moment that is was important. He had to protect her from this man because she wasn’t able to escape him. Many suspicions lingered and came to the front of his mind – that she was running or they were estranged, but he didn’t have the right to jump to conclusions or assume that he knew anything of their bedside manners because he knew nothing. Little over an hour ago, Sam was just an overtired and overworked detective that he sent home for rest. He sent her home to this and he was responsible for this latest attack. He would keep her safe from harm, no matter what the cost.
His hand reached over and rest on her shoulder, her small back in a gesture to calm her as he drove. Snapping the wheel into the hospital parking lot, he flicked his four ways on and parked in the yellow diagonal lines. He was allowed, he was the law and breaking the law was nothing for him. Cutting the engine, he unfastened his seat belt and turned to her, unfastening her own belt and pulling her into his arms. He didn’t mean it romantically, but he didn’t deny the fact that his reassuring actions were less than professional. Unbuttoning his shirt, he pressed her head against his chest and motioned for her own hand to feel hers. To hear his heartbeat, slow and calm beating, to bring her out of shock. He would have to bring her inside, she needed the attention desperately so but he needed to calm her. She was frightened and now aware that it was her husband he had to step up the security. “I won’t let them allow him in, we’ll keep someone here with you. Consider us a pack, we all look after each other – who are you closest to in the department? I’ll switch back and forth with them, 24 hour protection. We’ll cross the bridge on where you’ll stay when we get there.”
His large hand stroked her head down to her back, reassuring her. He had no idea or could he fathom how long she had been suffering from this man. If she loved him, she would still try to protect him no matter what pain she felt. If she wanted to be free, she would allow him to help her. It was the line on the ground that said start, they were about to pop the gun that told them to go. Once he felt she was calm enough, he popped open the door and lifted her from the car with him, shutting it with a foot as he made his way inside. It didn’t take much to send her on her way to being treated – all he had to do was wait for her to be in a room. Heading to the desk he had words to say for them all to hear and he would keep saying them until all of the staff in this hospital knew. “Boston PD Chief of Police Augustus Sawyer – under no circumstances is the patient I just brought in allowed any visitors unless my approval. Are we clear? No visitors.”

[/div] AND IGNITE YOUR BONES - - - - AND I WILL TRY TO FIX YOU as he informed her that she was indeed going to the hospital and that she was going to be taken care of, sam shook her head quickly, her fingers still pressing strongly to the bridge of her nose in order to try to stop the bleeding. she couldn't seem to get a handle on it, and the sticky substance was making her feel sick to her stomach. determined not to get sick in her boss' brand new car, she took a deep breath, letting it out slowly through her lips. "i can't go. we can't go. he can't see you with me. august, please, listen. he'll find me again." she whispered in vain, knowing that she had no choice. the shock that was settling like a blanket over her body was making her lose control, and as she did her best to regain it, she knew that she was failing miserably. trembling violently in the seat next to him, her teeth chattered loudly, hurting her nose and making it difficult to concentrate on anything.
gone was her reputation in augustus' eyes. she was supposed to be a strong detective, one of the best on the force. she had always striven to be the best she could be simply because she was female. her husband had always put her down in the past because of her gender, and even though he had loved the idea of working with her, he had always reminded her of her place. now she had just wanted to make something of herself. now she had just wanted to be someone in the eyes of the men in the station. they made their crude remarks every now and again about her looks or about her seemingly single status in life, but sam had played along. she had never fed into anything, she had never accepted date prospects and her excuse before was to remain professional. the truth was, she didn't want to put any man's life in danger because of her jealous husband. any man who she got into a relationship with would be in trouble because of her husband, and it wouldn't be fair either because she wasn't single. she just couldn't get her husband to sign the divorce papers. he was sitting on them at home, and she was forever tied to him unless she could get him to sign them. sam never felt more helpless than she did in this moment.
turning her face away from augustus as he drove quickly to the hospital, she felt his hand on her shoulder. it made her tense at first because of the trauma that she had just experienced, but after a few moments, she leaned into his touch. comfortable for the time being, except for the throbbing in her nose and her head, she closed her eyes against the tears, feeling them travel silently down her blood covered cheeks. she was going to be sick. however, in moments, she felt the car roll to a stop and she somehow managed to open her eyes, gazing at the bright lights that led to the hospital waiting room.
in another instant, she felt strong arms unbuckling her seat belt, wrapping themselves around her shaking body. going willingly, not fighting him, she fell into his lap, curling up against him despite who he was and who she was. right now, professionalism meant nothing to her. she needed to be comforted and he seemed more than willing to do that for her, so she allowed this to happen. trembling pitifully in his grasp, she kept her face hidden in his shoulder, feeling his hand work its way up to his chest to unbutton his top buttons. furrowing her brow, she tried to figure out what he was doing, feeling him guide her head to rest against his heart. her own heartbeat was fluttering madly out of control, making her feel out of breath and dizzy, but she was aware of his heart beat. it was slow, it was steady, and it was comforting. taking a deep breath, sam let it out slowly, her blue eyes closing as she focused on what he was trying to do for her. the tears slowly stopped falling, her heart stopped skipping beats as she listened to him. he was going to offer her protection, a twenty four hour watch. but in order to do that, he would need to inform another officer about what was happening.
her mind instantly flew to saxton, and she wondered if she would be able to look him in the eye if he knew the truth.
he was her friend, he would understand. they had had dinner together, they had spent time together outside of work. he wouldn't judge her. he might even worry for her. letting out a small whoosh of air as she finally relaxed, she spoke up, her voice muffled because of how she turned her face into his chest. "saxton." she whispered to him, confessing her only friend in all of boston. cringing at the thought of him knowing this truth as well, she sighed once more, her fingers clinging to his shirt as he tightened his grip around her to stand after she confessed to him. it only took moments to get her inside of the building, and the hospital staff was removing her from augustus' arms. for a moment, fresh tears started up again and she clung to him tightly, trying her best to remain with him. "miss, it'll be okay. he'll be along shortly, we promise." they told her over and over again, finally convincing her, with augustus' help that he wouldn't be separate from her for long. with her release, they quickly gave her a sedative, and she went limp against the stretcher that they had wheeled over.
her blood covered face was covered with an oxygen mask and she was wheeled away. the doctor informed augustus of her room number and it wasn't long before they were cleaning up her face to see the damage. her nose would need surgery, and they quickly got her started. it only took a couple of hours, and they were soon wheeling her into her room to recover. her nose was covered, her face was pale, and she looked washed out and sickly as she rested in the bed, groggily opening her eyes when she was finally able to. panic swelled in her chest and she tried sitting up, struggling in vain as she tried to escape the clutches of her bed. tagged .

in the daylight we'll be on our own He couldn’t fathom hitting a woman for any reason, let alone hitting a woman that he loved and cherished enough to married to. It was situations like this that made his blood boil, but he long ago taught himself how to control the anger when it came to this point. A woman that a man loved and adored should not be tortured this way, abused and left broken. This man she married needed psychological help and a place behind bars, but he was getting away with it because she was allowing herself to live in fear. He didn’t want to look at the situation so negatively, but she was allowing him to get away with it by running away and keeping quiet. He didn’t know all the fine writing, but if things like this happened every time the two were together, it needed to cease. While he knew she burst and told him something that was her deepest and darkest secret, he couldn’t turn a blind eye to something like this. Sam was part of the force he was now responsible for and if she wasn’t being rational with her personal life than he wasn’t confident she could make the right choices when it came to cases.
Of course, her work was brilliant and he never saw an ounce of anything that was wrong with it, but with her being so tired and worn ragged this all added to his doubts. She needed more than just two days off which was what he was originally haggling with her to take – now she needed at least week off or possibly two. She had to settle her personal life or else it would mix into her professional life, her career. It was a rotten place to be in for him and for her. He didn’t want there to be bad blood between them, he genuinely thought highly of her work and her work ethic. She never gave him any reason to prove she couldn’t do or job or that she was allowing her personal life to get in the way. However now with this entire situation of her personal life being exposed to him, he had to think of the bigger picture. She needed to escape this man and he needed to be punished for the crimes he was committing. Augustus knew he had to push forward with this now budding case even if Sam didn’t want him to. It involved him now; it would involve Saxton once he was given the duty of protecting her as well.
She was scared to part from him, but his strong arms were willing to pass her over to safety. She needed the medical attention more than she needed to be cradled by her boss she barely knew. He wanted to protect her, it was in his nature to do so, but knew what was more important. “Sam, it’ll be okay. I’ll be outside the door waiting and when they finally give me the ok, I’ll be there. You don’t need to worry, I’ll be there. You’re going to be okay.” She finally allowed them to take her and he set out to securing her, He couldn’t let this man keep haunting her and she needed help to get away from him. If she wasn’t going to do it for herself than he and Saxton would seek to it. Saxton was one of the few officers that respected Augustus in this position and he gave his respect to those who gave theirs. Sitting in the waiting room, he waited for a nurse to come for him, growing impatient from the wait. Deciding that it would take much longer than few minutes, he pulled out his work phone and scrolled through the list until he found Saxton. He didn’t like smart phones, they made him feel like his fingers were too large.
“Chief.” “Saxton, do you have time for a call?” “I do, just filing papers at the office. It’s as empty as an Old Western town in here.” Augustus chuckled, he knew the feeling. “We’ve had a situation that I will brief you on when I have privacy. I was looking to see if you would be available to switch-off on twenty-four hour supervision with me? We have an officer who needs protection.” “I’d be available as long as it’s not a female coworker, August. I don’t mean to offend, but I’m not looking to stir petty drama from the men in our department who find themselves with a stale life.” “It’s Sam.” There was a brief pause while Saxton typed in his copier ID and password followed a shufflinf around. “Did she request me?” “She did.” “I’ll do it.” Eyes drifting up at a nurse motioning for him to follow, August sighed.
“Gotta go.” Following the nurse, he was guided down a series of hallways until he was motioned to Sam’s room. Knocking lightly, he didn’t think she heard him until he was in the room looming over her bed that she was trying to desperately escape. "Come on now Sam, what do you think you're doing? Making a run for it already?" Hooking his foot around a chair leg, he pulled it up closer before sitting down next to her in the chair. He hated hospitals, they made him tired but Saxton would have to finish his work day and rest for at least eight hours as was legal protocol. This made for a long day for August, but he tried to keep the thought hidden from Sam. This wasn’t her fault, he felt responsible for sending her home to that man. Now he had to find the best place to keep her until she felt safe to be on her own. He worried that she would say she felt fine just to get back to her job quicker, but it wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. “Try to relax, Sam, you need to get your rest. I’m not going anywhere until Saxton gets here and that’s not until morning. Otherwise, you’re safe. Just rest up and watch some wheel of fortune or something.”

[/div] AND IGNITE YOUR BONES - - - - AND I WILL TRY TO FIX YOU they had been in love. madly so. ryan had been everything that she had looked for in a husband to be and she had fallen head over heels. he was successful, he was in law enforcement. it was like a match made in heaven and they had married straight after they had both gotten out of school. he hadn't shown any violent tendencies while they had been dating. he could be controlling, but sam had always managed to get him to relax. it was his jealousy that had scared her the most, but again, she was always able to get it under control. he had never shown any signs of hurting her, of wanting to cause her any harm. he was patient and gentle. she didn't know what changed but she wished she could be with the man that she had actually fallen in love with. they had been that couple that everyone had envied because of how deeply in love they seemed, because of how well they suited one another. and then one night it had all gone to shit.
he was drunk, but that wasn't anything to be alarmed over. he had gone out with his friends and he had driven home, which was not something that sam approved of obviously. when she confront him about it, he had shoved her hard, sending her flying into the counter. when she stared at him, started in on him for touching her in such a way, he had silenced her with a punch to her face, which had knocked her out cold. it wasn't until the next morning when she came to that she realized what had happened exactly.
and it had all gone down hill from there.
sighing softly to herself now, she tried not to think of ryan and her failed relationship. she had served him with the divorce papers and he had nearly killed her. every time she thought up an excuse, and it helped that she was so clumsy naturally. people believed the stories she would make up and it had been easy to hide her torture. however, she couldn't take it anymore and she had run. it was difficult because of who he was and how successful he was, but she had managed to slip through his clutches, until now. she didn't understand how he had been able to find her, but she needed to figure something out so he didn't make her go back with him, so that he didn't end up trying to kill her because he couldn't have her. what she needed to do was distance herself from everyone that she knew, especially the men. her friendship with saxton needed to be low key, but she realized with a start that she had just mentioned his name for that twenty four hour guard. augustus couldn't do it either. they had to see that.
so that was when she tried escaping. she had to get out of here so they wouldn't be put in harm's way by associating with her. ryan's jealousy was not something that she could control or handle and he would hurt them. somehow, some way, he would harm them. she couldn't be responsible for that. throwing back her blankets, she stopped immediately as she heard the soft knock on the door. biting her lower lip, she tried to unhook her catheter from her inner elbow, but it was to no avail. sighing in frustration, she slumped back groggily into the bed, her blue eyes lifting to take in the sturdy, muscular form of her boss as he questioned her. sam's voice slurred to life and it would have been comical if not for the reality of her situation. "i'm bustin' outta here. you comin'? she asked him, her vision swimming momentarily as she sat up too quickly. sitting back with a groan, she reached up to gently touch the thick bandage on her nose. "i can't explain this one..." she confessed to him, shaking her head a bit to prove her point.
letting out a whoosh of air, she looked to him once more as he pulled his chair over to sit beside her bed. "you don't havta stay, sir. i'm goin' home, and i'll be workin' tomorrow. good as new." she informed him with a nod of her head, proud of herself for telling the chief the way that it was going to be. however, as she settled back into her pillows, her eyelids felt heavy and she felt the exhaustion settle over her. reaching out blindly, her hand found his and she weakly squeezed his fingers with her own. "you have to sleep." she whispered to augustus, shimmying over in her bed as if it made all of the sense in the world. he could sleep next to her. no one would know, or see them. the nurses and staff members would leave her alone if they knew augustus was with her. patting the bed deliriously beside her, she waited for him, wanting nothing more than to be in his strong arms again, where she had felt safe. "please? you're safe." she admitted in a whisper, trying to hide her fear, but failing miserably. she had a lot to stomach right now and she honestly just wanted to sleep. but not without him next to her. she just couldn't do it without him for some strange reason now. tagged .

in the daylight we'll be on our own With a long night ahead of him, augustus found his mind lingering to the vending machine of junk food in the lobby to the cafeteria full of food flights of stairs below where they were. Despite the hunger majorly in his mind and not in his stomach, he wouldn’t put Sam at risk over food but it was what his mind drifted to, latched on to, to keep from fueling a low fire of anger in his stomach. He didn’t know anything about this man other than he was beating his wife, but it was all it took to anger him. There was no excuse to hit a woman that you loved, fighting or not, there was none. Bickering, fighting it was all part of a serious relationship. He didn’t see where physical violence was part of the equation. Yet it had been almost two years since his last serious relationship. The ending was ugly and he regretted seeing something blow so out of proportion but it wasn’t something you could fix after the damage was done. In the end he chose being a police officer over being with her and she didn’t settle with that at all.
His priorities were different then and he was career driven. After only a few weeks of dating she shifted her sights to marriage and children. That idea when he was twenty-eight frightened him, he felt like it was too soon and he still had career goals to accomplish. It was horrible to think that he found a family hindering to his career and he put his career first. He wasn’t sure if that was the case now, he hadn’t pursued a woman in so long; he saw eyes that appreciated him when he walked by, but none of tho9se eyes lured him in. His mind shifted to sam and he balked at the idea of marrying so young. She was five years his junior, she had years more to fulfill dreams and become a person. She was hindered by this constant villain in her life. If she still loved the man than there was not much neither he nor saxton would accomplish by watching out for her. She had to be ready to leave him completely no matter what the pain or cost would come. He didn’t know if she had started the process or not, but he would push for her to do it.
Taking in her appearance, he wanted to sigh but for all form of being polite he held it in. she was sickly pale and the bandages on her face made him cringe. A husband did this to his wife, a husband did this to his wife – it was the only thought he could process at the sight of her. She sat up quickly from his arrival and he raised eyebrows in intrigued interest. She was a bit too much like him, he decided, and she was pushing herself to get back in action to quick. With her words slurring and stating that she was busting out of there, he snorted at her, but it wasn’t loudly enough for her to hear. He wasn’t going to allow it, he could always hold her job above her head. It wasn’t something he truly wanted to do but he would do it if she was going to be dangerous and stupid about her life when it was on the line. Resting was what she needed along with protection. He couldn’t make her rest but he was protecting her with his damndest efforts. He pulled over the chair and watched her with sad eyes, listening to her say she couldn’t explain this attack; he knew it wasn’t the first. He sighed, unable to hold it in as he leaned forward.
“Did you ever think that you don’t have to explain? You don’t have to cover up or make excuses or hide from him. You have the resources to help you get away from him, but you have to want to do it. You can’t let him keep getting away with his and you can’t keep covering up or hiding. Samantha, this could kill you. He could kill you. Don’t you understand?” her words infuriated him as she further proceeded to tell him that he didn’t have to stay that he could go home, that she would go home, back home to that and be back working the next day. He growled as he adjusted himself in his chair. He didn’t like it when his officers told him off, lately it was all they wanted to do was to bust his chops, but this was another thing. This was choosing to live in fear and pain over being safe and sound and it was a stupid choice she was making. “No, I do have to stay. If you can’t make wise and rational choices, than you don’t have the choice to make them at all. You won’t be going back to there and I won’t be going back to mine until Saxton comes to keep you safe. As for work? Mandatory month leave for you, Sam. It’s non-negotiable. You need the rest and you need time to take care of this. You can’t keep living this way. He needs help and you need help. Hell, he needs to be locked up and you know it. If it’s not you it could become someone else.”
Through his ranting, she reached out and took his hand and he quieted. That was the thing about temporarily losing his anger, he didn’t want it to get the best of him the way it had been. She shimmied over in the bed and he couldn’t get in beside her. It wasn’t safe or professional, she needed to have her own personal space because for Christ sakes she had just been raped and he knew it by the manner of her dress. He held his tongue because when she told him that he was safe to her, he didn’t know if he could deny it. He wanted to make her feel safe and if that was how he was going to do it than he relented. Slowly getting in beside her, he even kicked off his shoes as of some odd way of showing respect for the hospital’s bed. He practically enveloped her in size, he felt like a giant that jack the giant slayer needed to slay, but he pushed all humorous thoughts aside and focused. There was his habit of thinking of something else when he was uncomfortable. He didn’t want to lose his job for this and hospital surveillance cameras made him nervous.
“see? I’m here. You’re safe, sam, go to sleep. I’ll still be here when you wake up.” He pushed over the cusp of professionalism, his arms wrapping around her and pulling her close and tight beside him to make her feel safe. This woman spent her days in a police department saving and protecting thousands of innocent lives. If this was how she needed protection and how she needed to feel safe, than it was equally his job as the chief of the entire police department to make her feel safe tonight.

[/div] AND IGNITE YOUR BONES - - - - AND I WILL TRY TO FIX YOU her emotions were like a roller coaster, going up and down without her hoping to control them. as she lay on her side in the hospital bed, she felt hot tears prick the back of her eyes, leaking down her cheeks and dripping to the harsh sheets of the hospital bed. she wanted to go home but she knew it wasn't rational, it wasn't safe. he could be there. he knew where she lived now and she had no hope of escaping him again unless she moved out of boston. however, she had finally settled here. she had made a life for herself, had made a name and reputation for herself in the police department filled with men. she didn't want to move, but ryan left her no choice. if he wouldn't sign the divorce papers and leave her alone, there was nothing more that she could do. her running had given him a better reputation back in their home turf. he had painted her as a liar and a cheater and there was no way that she would be believed over him. he was a successful law enforcement official and she was the runner. augustus wouldn't understand, and as he explained to her that she could change all of this, she closed her eyes against the current of tears that refused to stop falling.
sam was not an individual who cried. she was known for keeping her composure on the force no matter what was thrown their way, and she was also known for her ability to remain as detached as possible from any case. she was the epitome of professional when it came to dealing with anything job related and that was why it was so hard for herself to fall apart at the seams, especially in front of her boss.
taking a deep breath through her chapped lips, she let it out slowly and opened her now vibrant blue eyes to look at augustus. "i used to love him. i would have done anything for him." she muttered in her misery, moving her gaze from his face to stare off over his shoulder as he sat in front of her bed. he had to understand that she was doing the only thing left that she could do. "i got divorce papers drawn up. i signed them. he won't sign them. he won't let me go, but i want to..i don't love him anymore, i don't want to be with him anymore. i just want to be left alone." she finished, her voice breaking as she closed her eyes once more, the silent sobs racking her petite body as she confessed her secrets to a man she hardly knew, but knew she could trust. something inside of her told her that augustus would keep her safe even though her previous taste in men could be considered shitty at best. she just knew in her heart that this was okay, that this was what she needed to do. her composure returned as she took another deep breath, and she reached the hand that didn't hold the iv to brush away her tears. "i've been running from him because there's nothing else i can do. he's a police officer, respected, well known and loved. he's ruined my name and reputation back home, and it's his word against mine. they'll never believe me."
she informed him quietly, her head spinning out of control again as she felt dazed from the pain killers they had given her. letting out a whoosh of air, she brought her eyes back to her face, hearing his command. a mandatory month leave? she couldn't return to her apartment? her heart skipped a beat at the sudden realization of the loss of her freedom and she shook her head. but she couldn't seem to get a handle on her swimming thoughts. "no...n-no, you can't. i don't have anywhere else to go...i have t-to work, please." she begged of him, further ruining her reputation in her mind. exhausted now, she tried in vain to convince him to let her go back, but he would not budge. it wasn't until she reached for him through her tears did he finally quiet himself, making the decision to crawl into the bed with her despite how inappropriate it was. as he wrapped his arms around her, sam could no longer control herself.
inching forward, she carefully buried her face into his strong chest and let her arms encircle his waist. the tears came once again, fresh and hot and she let herself cry into him, exhausting herself until she had no more tears to cry. hearing him pledge that she was safe, that he would be right there when she woke up, she spoke, her voice muffled against the fabric of his shirt. "don't go. please, please don't go." she pleaded yet again, keeping her eyes shut tight as she drifted in and out of sleep rather fitfully. she would need to be moved in the morning so that ryan couldn't find her, but for now, with augustus, she was safe. and that was all that she could wish for now. tagged .

in the daylight we'll be on our own Every officer had a different reason for joining the force and no two were the same. Augustus was learning each reason, slowly, but he didn’t know what her reason was along with many others. It was no easy task learning the names of over two hundred employees that worked in the department. He needed to know them all, even if he only oversaw the officers; he felt a need to know the secretarial and custodial. He wasn’t a man who wanted any employee to go feeling as if their hard work wasn’t appreciated. One of the ways to make someone feel appreciated and important was to know why they chose their career path. Even if people denied it, your job said more about you than anything else ever could. Augustus chose this career path because he wanted to be a protector, someone who could keep someone safe. He always wanted to be like his father and his father was a protective man over his wife and their children. This was how Augustus was raised, he wouldn’t have any other influence than his father and grandfathers. Call them old fashioned, but they knew where their place was and what they had to do.
He still couldn’t wrap his head around this man, her husband, hitting and torturing, scaring and scarring upon his wife this brutally. How long had they been together before she married him? Did she ever see a violent streak or was she played for a fool? Did something lead up to this point or had it always been like this? Did they lack communication? All of these questions he mulled over in his head quietly as he let her take her time telling him more information. He had this feeling deep in his gut and he didn’t want her to confirm it. He didn’t want this sinking feeling to be true or well justified. Yet what deeply bother him more is that he didn’t know if he had the ability to persuade her out of this. He was her boss, but he could only hold her job above her head so high before it became harassment. He could only say so much before it was harassment. Harassment laws were a bitch and even this was too close, even this was controversial. Yet he didn’t have the heart to make her come to terms with this alone today – he didn’t want her to have to be alone through this. Her only friend in this city was Saxton? He found it hard to believe but he wouldn’t push it further along.
He would be okay if he could convince himself she was isolating herself because she wanted to be alone, but given the facts he knew it wasn’t likely. He knew it was because of this man, that she was protecting anyone would get close before they could get close enough. He had to put a stop to her loneliness, to her pain, to all of this even if it was the end of his professional career. This wasn’t a professional motive. He felt an overwhelming desire to protect this woman he didn’t know at all. This revelation added to his discomfort, but he didn’t let it show. He listened to her, everything she had to say. Even if he didn’t agree with what she said or questions that sprung further into his head. He could tell she loved him, but this love turned to become close to deadly for her. Augustus questioned silently if she would ever be comfortable with another man but he didn’t think she would be. He was leaning to believe that comfort she was finding in his arms while he held her in this bed to be short-lived and a onetime occurrence.
He knew that taking away her freedom was drastic, but he knew also knew it would keep her safe. Ultimately she would decide what she wanted to do, but he would still stand by his decision for a month leave from the department. She needed the rest and she needed to control this. He didn’t want her to be in harm’s way and he would be cruel until she realized that. He felt guilt wash over him as she stumbled over keeping her words calm as she pleaded with him. His body hardened and he didn’t break face, being strong for her. She wouldn’t understand right now this was for the better due to this traumatic night, but he rationalized in his head she eventually would. He gave into her, slipping into the bed beside her as he held her close. He could suffocate her with his size and a need to protect, but he refrained.
He felt her arms slip around his waist and he smiled. She wanted to be attached? Well if it made her feel professional, he told himself he could withstand it. Truthfully, something he couldn’t admit, he wanted to hold her close to stop her from crying. He couldn’t handle all of this pain and her tears, he didn’t know if she had much more in her to cry, but she did. “I won’t be going anywhere, sleep.” He murmured to her softly – each time she awoke he found himself awake as well, but he was a light sleeper as it were. He was often awake and aware without her, thinking of how he could help her. The knowledge was entirely too knew, he didn’t know where to put her when it came to her living arrangements. He had a spare bedroom, he would offer it, but he expected a flat out no. it was the thought that counted, that was what his father always taught him: always assume no, but never give them an offer they can’t collect. He found himself petting her hair, but he was exhausted and tired it seemed the only thing that kept him connected and awake was to comfort her in her time of need. There was nothing unprofessional about this, nothing at all.
