My drunken has a Daniel in a lion's den. And tonight I know it all has to begin again, So whatever you do, Don't let go. | [atrb=width,300][cs=1] | [atrb=width,200]tagged: johnny words: some outfit: here | [cs=2][atrb=width,500] DURING HER THREE YEARS AS A SLAVE TO THE RUSSIAN MAFIA, THE BLOND DYE HAD GROWN OUT OF HER HAIR, RETURNING IT TO ITS NATURAL BROWN COLOR. SHE HADN'T MINDED IT, SINCE, IN HER MIND, IT WAS A SYMBOLIC GROWTH THAT TOOK HER AWAY FROM THE EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL PAIN THAT BECAME HER LIFE DURING THAT SLAVERY. FOR THREE YEARS, EVERYONE HAD BELIEVED HER DEAD. THEY ASSUMED SHE WAS MURDERED ALONGSIDE HER FATHER, AND THERE WERE PLENTY OF TIMES WHERE SHE WISHED SHE HAD BEEN. SHE'D WATCHED HIM DIE, AND IT STILL HAUNTED HER NIGHTMARES THREE YEARS LATER. IT REPLAYED IN HER HEAD LIKE A HORROR FILM, CAUSING HER TO WAKE UP IN A COLD SWEAT FROM THOSE DREAMS.
RUNNING HER FINGERS THROUGH HER BROWN HAIR, SHE CLOSED HER EYES FOR A MOMENT AND SUCKED IN A DEEP BREATH, PUSHING THOSE IMAGES OF HER FATHER FROM HER HEAD. SHE'D WOKEN UP AT FOUR IN THE MORNING WITH ANOTHER NIGHTMARE, AND SHE HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO GO BACK TO SLEEP. IT WAS TOO UNSETTLING, TOO REALISTIC, AND THERE WAS NO HOPE OF SLEEPING AFTER DREAMS LIKE THOSE. SO, SHE'D SET HER MIND ON HER CURRENT GOALS.
FIRST, THERE WAS NYX: THE ALTER EGO NO ONE IN PROPER SOCIETY KNEW SHE HAD. IN A SENSE, SHE WAS AN EVERYDAY SUPER HERO IF A PERSON FELT THE NEED TO PUT A TITLE ON IT. SHE WAS A VIGILANTE, WEARING A MASK AND SPORTING AN ALIAS, IN HER MOVE TO FOLLOW HER VOW MADE TO HER FATHER. SHE KNEW HER FATHER NEVER WANTED THAT SORT OF LIFE FOR HER, AND SHE STRUGGLED WITH THE GUILT OF IT ALL, BUT SHE ALSO KNEW HE EXPECTED IT. THERE WAS NO OTHER ANSWER. ONLY SO MUCH COULD BE DONE THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS OF THE LAW, ESPECIALLY IN A TOWN SO CORRUPTED AND TWISTED AS BOSTON HAD BECOME. AT LEAST HALF OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS ON ONE PAYROLL OR ANOTHER FOR THE ELITE CRIMINALS WHO OWNED THE TOWN. SO SHE COULDN'T TURN TO THEM FOR SUPPORT.
THAT MEANT SHE HAD TO TAKE THINGS INTO HER OWN HANDS. THUS, NYX WAS BORN.
BUT THAT COULDN'T BE HER ONLY ANSWER. ONE VIGILANTE COULDN'T REPAIR THE CITY ALL BY HERSELF.
AND THAT WAS WHERE JOHNNY GIANCOLA CAME IN. HE WAS HER ANSWER TO REPAIRING WHAT WAS WRONG WITH BOSTON. HE WAS YOUNG AND INEXPERIENCED COMPARED TO OTHER OPTIONS FOR MAYOR OF THE CITY, BUT SHE KNEW HE WAS THE BEST CHOICE. HIS PAST WAS BROKEN AND REPAIRED IN PATCHES, BUT SHE KNEW HIS HEART WAS GOOD AND PURE DESPITE ALL OF HIS OUTWARD FLAWS. HE HAD REASON TO BE AS TORN UP AND DRUNK AND DRUGGED UP AS HE HAD BEEN OVER RECENT MONTHS. HIS HABITS WERE LESS THAN AGREEABLE, BUT SHE COULD WORK WITH HIM. SHE COULD MOLD HIM AND MAKE HIM INTO A MAN WORTHY OF RESPECT.
PULLING HER SILKEN BROWN HAIR UP INTO A PONYTAIL, SHE KNOCKED ON THE DOOR TO JOHNNY'S APARTMENT AND WAITED FOR AN ANSWER. WAITING LONG ENOUGH THAT SHE KNEW HE WASN'T GOING TO ANSWER ANYTIME SOON - ALSO BEING AWARE THAT HE COULD ONLY BE INSIDE AND NOT ANYWHERE ELSE - SHE ROLLED HER EYES, HUFFED IMPATIENTLY, AND BENT TO RETRIEVE THE SPARE KEY FROM BENEATH THE WELCOME MAT OUTSIDE OF HIS DOOR. "REALLY, THERE ARE BETTER PLACES TO HIDE SUCH THINGS," SHE MUTTERED TO HERSELF AS SHE UNLOCKED THE DOOR AND BARGED INTO THE APARTMENT.
HER HAZEL EYES SCANNED THE LIVING ROOM, WHICH LOOKED AS IF A BOMB HAD GONE OFF, AND SHE SUCKED IN A DEEP BREATH AS SHE ASSESSED THE DAMAGE. BEER BOTTLES LAID EVERYWHERE, INTERSPERSED SPARINGLY WITH A RANDOM EMPTY BAG OF CHIPS OR SOME NACHOS THAT WERE PROBABLY A WEEK OLD. THE SMELL WAS BEGINNING TO RISE IN THE ROOM, AND SHE CRINGED AGAINST IT, CLIMBING THROUGH THE MESS TO THE KITCHEN WHERE SHE FOUND A TRASHBAG. BAG IN HAND, SHE HASTILY THREW AWAY ALL OF THE MOST OBVIOUS DEBRIS AND TIED THE BAG, FILLING TWO TRASH BAGS IN A SIMILAR FASHION. PILING THE BAGS BY THE DOOR, SHE NOTICED THE TRAIL OF COCAINE, THE REMANTS THAT HADN'T BEEN SUCKED THROUGH SOMEONE'S NOSE, AND SHE CURLED HER NOSE AT IT. FINDING A SEPARATE BAG, SHE CLEANED UP THE POWDERY MESS (CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT ON HER CLOTHING OR HANDS) AND STOWED IT AWAY WHERE NO UNSUSPECTING POLICE OFFICER WOULD FIND IT IN THE EVERY DAY TRASH. THAT WAS THE LAST THING THEY NEEDED; SOMEONE FINDING OUT AND EXPOSING THE FACT THAT HE DID DRUGS. DRINKING WASN'T SO BAD - MOST POLITICIANS LIKED DRINKING AND WERE EASILY FORGIVEN FOR IT - BUT DRUGS WERE A DIRTY HABIT THAT FEW PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO FORGET.
SATISFIED THAT THE APARTMENT WAS RETURNED TO SOME SEMBLANCE OF ORDER, SHE STEELED HERSELF AND MARCHED INTO HIS BEDROOM. DESPERATELY HOPING HE WAS ALONE, SHE GRABBED THE COMFORTER AND THREW IT BACK ON THE BED, CROSSING HER ARMS OVER HER CHEST AS HE REACTED TO THE SUDDEN REMOVAL OF THE WARM BLANKETS. WALKING AROUND THE END OF THE BED, SHE TOSSED OPEN THE CURTAINS ON THE WINDOWS, ADMITTING SOME MUCH-NEEDED SUNLIGHT TO THE DIN OF DARKNESS THAT WAS HIS SLEEPING QUARTER. "GET UP," SHE ORDERED, NOT-SO-GENTLY, MOVING TO HIS CLOSET TO FIND A CLEAN PAIR OF PANTS AND A SHIRT THAT WOULD BE PRESENTABLE IN PUBLIC. UNFORTUNATELY, MOST OF HIS CLOTHING LAY IN DIRTY PILES ON THE FLOOR, BUT SHE WAS SUCCESSFUL AND EMERGED WITH A MAROON BUTTON-UP SHIRT AND A GRAY PAIR OF PANTS.
"COME ON, GET DRESSED, YOU'VE GOT A BIG DAY TODAY," SHE ANNOUNCED AS CHEERFULLY AS POSSIBLE, TOSSING HIS CLOTHES ON THE END OF HIS BED AND WAITING FOR HIM TO RISE, TOO STUBBORN TO LEAVE FOR FEAR HE WOULD JUST CRAWL BACK IN BED TO MOPE. IF BOSTON HAD ANY HOPE OF BEING REDEEMED, SHE COULDN'T ALLOW HIM TO SLEEP HIS LIFE AWAY. |

[style=background: transparent; width:240px; padding:5px; text-align: center; font-size: 9px;]WORDS nine seven nine TAGGED phillipa jean regan Last night was a mistake. It truly was. He had been doing so well, only drinking occasionally and spending more time with Bailey and focusing on his campaign, that he had forgotten his mild depression. But his mother had called, and while she had the best intentions with every phone call she completed, last night was not a good one. His sister’s memorial service was coming up over the weekend, and she was begging him to go. Johnny was planning on going, but his mother had cried and sobbed over the phone, confiding in her youngest son just how hard the last few months had been. Hearing his mother’s tears had brought him back to the days where he wished he could numb his pain, and he after he hung up, he went into his secret stash.
It was by himself, which was even worse. Bailey hadn’t answered her phone, and only she and Phillipa knew about his dirty habits. The night, as a whole, had been a blur of drinking and numbing his state of mind, the only sober part of him reminded him that he would regret everything in the morning. Johnny simply ignored that sober part and continued, by himself, on his downward spiral. There was no one that could really help him at moments like this.
He truly did want to become mayor. His heart was in the right place, with wanting to help Boston become what it used to be. Being a defender of the poor turned into a prosecutor, Johnny had seen more than most politicians saw in their entire life. He was new too, too young to be have been completely corrupted like the majority of the politicians and police officers he saw every day. Johnny defended officers that had been tempted with the thousands of dollars the mafia’s had offered them for information, and while he had gotten them off relatively well, he hated it. He wanted the people that endangered others to rot in prison, to never have the chance to see the world again. People rarely left the dark side, tempted with the beauty and riches that were offered. People had tempted him before, with money and riches, and Johnny had denied. Instead, as his downward spiral had started, he had given in to one poor soul that paid him off with drugs. That soul had been killed months later, due to a bad business deal that Johnny had no part of, and all connections were lost. There was no one that could prove that Johnny had a bulk of drugs in his own apartment, and he wasn’t stupid enough to do drugs outside.
Phillipa Jean Regan had entered his life by force. She had taken over as his campaign manager, getting meetings set up and donors ready to sell him their house if he won. It was nice, knowing that people had faith in him, but it was all due to the people skills Phillipa had. Even though he wasn’t as known and popular as the other canidates, Philllipa had seen something in him that was worthy of becoming mayor and was willing to support him. Johnny knew that she would mold him into the man worthy of the public and manage to rid him of all his vices. He had faith in that.
Rolling over in his bed, he groaned at the throbbing pain that was echoing through his forehead. He heard his front door open and heard the familiar sounds of heals echoing through the apartment. Philllipa had obviously found the spare key and was cleaning up the mess he had made, something he felt semi embarrassed for, but had no want to help. At least he had been by himself, unlike the other times he had been drunk over the last couple of months. Before Bailey, before everything had started to change, he had had strippers dancing around with his buddies paying. He hadn’t paid for them, his buddies had, but those strippers had been on so many drugs that he was sure they had no idea it was him. Johnny didn’t have a dirty past, not one that people could figure out anyways.
Those damn heels were coming closer and closer to his safe haven, and before Johnny could groan and say hi, his blankets were off and the window was streaming sunlight. A moan escaped his lips as he heart Phillipa, ordering him around in a cheerful manner, prepare for the day. He sat up, pleased that Bailey hadn’t spent the night and looked at her over his tired eyes. His mind was throbbing right now, but he had to listen to her. She was the reason he was going to succeed in life, and it was his fault he was in this mess. ”Sorry for the mess. I hired a maid for Monday’s so the apartment can look a little cleaner,” he mumbled, rolling out of bed and stumbling towards the shower. His shower was short and warm, and it helped him wake up. Johnny had a whole stock of medication for hangovers and when he was down cleaning himself, he popped a couple of Advil’s into his mouth and started drinking the red Gatorade he placed in his bathroom the night before.
He made his way into the kitchen, not surprised to see Phillipa still in his apartment. Johnny started the coffee maker, sure that coffee was the only thing he could probably stomach at a time like this. ”Sorry you had to clean the mess. I’ve been really good lately, but my sister’s memorial service is coming up this weekend and my mother’s been calling me and crying nonstop. It’s been a lot to handle,” he said honestly, running his fingers through his hair. Honesty work best with their relationship, and that was what he was going to give her.

And tonight I know it all has to begin again, So whatever you do, Don't let go. | [atrb=width,300][cs=1] | [atrb=width,200]tagged: johnny words: some outfit: here | [cs=2][atrb=width,500] HEARING JOHNNY MOAN AS THE SUNLIGHT STREAMED INTO THE ROOM, SHE SIGHED TO HERSELF. SHE KNEW SHE WAS HARD ON HIM - PERHAPS TOO HARD SOMETIMES - BUT SHE FELT THE NEED TO PUSH HIM TO GET HIM TO THAT LEVEL OF GREATNESS SHE KNEW HE COULD REACH. SHE SUPPOSED SHE WAS TOO PUSHY, BUT HE WAS IN THE STATE OF MIND WHERE HE NEEDED THAT EXTRA GOAD TO GET HIM GOING.
"A MAID ISN'T A BAD IDEA, SINCE I'M NOT ONE," SHE COMMENTED, THE GHOST OF A SMIRK TEASING AT THE CORNER OF HER MOUTH. IT WAS HER JOB TO CLEAN UP HIS MESSES, BUT SHE WASN'T ABOUT TO BECOME HIS HOUSEKEEPER. PLEASED THAT SHE HAD AWOKEN HIM, SHE TURNED AND DEPARTED TO THE LIVING ROOM AS HE WENT ABOUT BATHING HIMSELF. SHE CLOSED THE BEDROOM DOOR BEHIND HER FOR HIS PRIVACY AND EYED THE LIVING ROOM WHICH COULD STILL USE A GOOD SWEEPING. NEVER HAVING BEEN ATTRACTED TO JOHNNY FOR HIS LOOKS, SHE WAS DISINTERESTED IN HIS BATHING OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT IT MEANT IT HURRIED ALONG THEIR DAY. SHE HAD A SCHEDULE ALREADY MARKED OUT FOR HIM, AND SHE WAS IMPATIENT WHEN IT CAME TO HIS CAMPAIGN. SHE FELT AN URGENT DESIRE TO DO EVERYTHING IN HER POWER TO MAKE HIM THE MAYOR SO THIS CITY COULD BE HEALED ONCE AND FOR ALL. IT WOULD BE A DIFFICULT TASK EVEN WHEN HE GOT INTO THAT SEAT OF POWER, BUT IT WOULD BE A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. SHE JUST HAD TO STRENGTHEN HIS WILL AND HIS BACKBONE SO HE WOULDN'T BE THE NEXT VICTIM TO CAVE TO THE CRIMINALS IN THIS CITY. CORRUPTION AND MANIPULATION WERE POWERFUL TOOLS IN A TOWN LIKE BOSTON.
FIDGETING IMPATIENTLY WITH THE NECKLACES DANGLING AROUND HER NECK, SHE FORCED HERSELF TO SIT ON ONE OF THE BAR STOOLS ALONG THE COUNTER, HER FEET CHANGING POSITIONS ALMOST NONSTOP AS SHE TRIED TO KEEP HERSELF STILL. HER URGENCY TO FULFILL HER PROMISE TO HER FATHER MADE HER IMPATIENT AND FRENETIC, AND SHE HAD TO FORCE HERSELF TO REMAIN CALM AT ALL TIMES. IF SHE EVER STOPPED MOVING, SHE WAS AFRAID THE GOAL WOULD MOVE PAST HER AND SHE WOULD BE UNABLE TO CATCH BACK UP.
HEARING THE DOOR OPEN BEHIND HER CAUGHT HER ATTENTION, AND SHE TURNED TO SEE JOHNNY WALKING TOWARD HER, DRESSED ALBEIT LOOKING A BIT OFF-KILTER. SHE COULD HANDLE HIM OFF-KILTER, SHE JUST COULDN'T HANDLE HIM GIVING UP ALTOGETHER. HIS EXPLANATION AS HE STARTED THE COFFEEPOT SILENCED HER, AND SHE STRUGGLED TO FIND SOMETHING COMFORTING TO SAY. SHE'D LOST HER FATHER - WATCHED HIM MURDERED RIGHT BEFORE HER - BUT SHE WAS HORRIBLE AT CONSOLING PEOPLE. SHE COULD EMPATHIZE WITH HIM, BUT SHE COULDN'T VOCALIZE IT. SHE WAS GOOD WITH PEOPLE, BUT SHE WASN'T TERRIBLY WONDERFUL WITH EMOTIONS. "MAYBE THE CAMPAIGN WILL HELP YOU GET YOUR MIND OFF OF IT," SHE SUGGESTED, HOPING TO BE HELPFUL AND NOT INTENDING TO GOAD HIM MORE. THEY WERE THE SAME AGE, AND THEY'D BOTH LOST MUCH IN THE YEARS THEY'D BEEN ALIVE. IT WAS DESPICABLE THAT TWO PEOPLE WHO SHOULD BE ENJOYING LIFE AND PARTYING AND OVERALL HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME LIVING, SPENT MOST OF THEIR TIME WONDERING WHERE THEIR LIVES HAD GONE WRONG.
PHILLIPA NEVER OPENED UP TO ANYONE ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO HER. SHE WAS VERY CLOSED OFF ABOUT THE ENTIRE ORDEAL, ONLY GOING INTO THE DETAILS THE COURTS REQUIRED WHEN SHE'D BEEN QUESTIONED ABOUT HER FATHER'S DEATH AND HER KIDNAPPING. SHE HADN'T TOLD THEM ABOUT BEING A SLAVE OR BEING RAPED BY THE RUSSIAN MEN NATALIA HAD CHOSEN TO ENTERTAIN. SHE COULDN'T TELL ANYONE ABOUT THAT. THOSE SECRETS WERE COVERED IN BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE, STRAPPED DOWN IN THE BACK OF HER MIND WHERE THEY COULDN'T HURT HER BUT COULD FUEL HER WILL TO FULFILL HER FATHER'S REQUEST. SHE COULDN'T ALLOW THOSE THINGS TO WEAKEN HER.
STANDING FROM THE STOOL, UNABLE TO SIT ANY LONGER, SHE WALKED TO HER PURSE AND WITHDREW THE DAILY PLANNER SHE KEPT FOR HIS CAMPAIGN. OPENING THE BLACK LEATHER FOLDER, SHE FLIPPED TO THE WEEK AND RAN A FINGER DOWN THE PAGE, READING THROUGH THE DAY'S EVENTS. "YOU'VE GOT INTERVIEWS COMING UP LATER THIS AFTERNOON, AND I'VE GOT ADVIL IN MY PURSE IN CASE YOUR HANGOVER DOESN'T GO AWAY BY THEN," SHE POINTED OUT IN A BUSINESS TONE, NONPLUSSED BY THE FACT THAT HE'D PROBABLY DRUNK TOO MUCH THE NIGHT BEFORE. SHE TOOK IT IN STRIDE. HE WAS A GOOD PERSON, WITH A GOOD HEART, AND HIS BAD HABITS ULTIMATELY DIDN'T MATTER, SO SHE GLOSSED OVER THEM. IT WAS HER JOB TO GET THE PRESS AND THE PUBLIC TO DO THE SAME IF THEY EVER FOUND OUT. SO SHE DID HER BEST TO MAKE HIM LOOK GOOD FOR THE CAMERAS.
"BAILEY IS WELL, I PRESUME?" SHE ASKED THE COMPULSORY QUESTION ABOUT HIS SIGNIFICANT OTHER, A LOVELY GIRL SHE HONESTLY LIKED. THE BLOND WAS A GOOD INFLUENCE ON HIM, AND THAT MADE PHILLIPA HAPPY.
"THERE'S AN EVENT GOING ON IN THE HARBOR IN A FEW DAYS THAT I HAVE YOU SCHEDULED TO ATTEND, AND YOU'LL NEED A DATE. I CAN HAVE A PERSONAL SHOPPER SET UP TO FIND YOU BOTH SOMETHING SUITABLE TO WEAR SO YOU LOOK DAPPER AND DASHING. THE FUTURE MAYOR OF BOSTON NEEDS TO BE SEEN AT THESE THINGS, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT'S THE SELWYNS BASICALLY GIVING ALL OF BOSTON A SLAP IN THE FACE."
GRINDING HER TEETH TOGETHER, SHE GLARED DOWN AT HER DAILY PLANNER IN A WEAK ATTEMPT TO CONCEAL HER RAGE AT THE IRISH MAFIA. THEY WERE SO BLATANT WITH THEIR STATEMENT: THEY OWNED BOSTON AND THERE WAS NOTHING ANYONE COULD DO ABOUT IT. SHE WOULD BE ATTENDING, BUT NOT ONLY AS HERSELF. SHE ALREADY HAD HER FIRST TARGET IN MIND, A MAN WHO WAS ON A LIST SHE KEPT HER IN HER OWN PERSONAL PLANNER: A LIST OF PEOPLE WHO HAD RUINED THE TOWN AND WOULD PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE. |

[style=background: transparent; width:240px; padding:5px; text-align: center; font-size: 9px;]WORDS eight four nine TAGGED phillipa jean regan Phillipa was hard, that much was certain. But he needed the stability in his life, someone that would push him to the limit. The limit wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering that was what would make him become the person Boston needed. He wasn’t stupid; the mafia was controlling everything that was going on, and it was up to him and Phillipa to control it. Faith needed to be restored.
As he exited the bathroom, the clothes she had picked out were laid out nicely for him on the messy bed, and he walked around his towel, picking up the clothing and disposing of them into the laundry bin. He knew how to do laundry, yet didn’t actually want to go all the way to the Laundromat to do it. A maid would be useful, and that way, Bailey wouldn’t have to clean for him. Bailey was an amazing person, but the last thing Johnny wanted was for her to feel like all she was around for was to clean for him. She hadn’t been around his apartment lately, mostly because it was too big of a mess, and partly because he had been staying over her house. It was close enough to the meeting places that he and Phillipa had decided on when they first had met. Sometimes, she didn’t come to his apartment and barge in as though nothing was going on, sometimes they met somewhere instead. Usually it was at coffee shops, but when it got closer to interviews and moments like that, they met at his office. Being the owner of a law practice, and a semi successful one, he had his own personal office building and it was perfect for managing the campaign. Phillipa even had one of the keys at this point in their relationship.
She was right, like always, the campaign would get his mind off of it. His thoughts would be pushed aside for a smile and a laugh instead, as he pretended that everything was alright. As long as he didn’t fight anyone, everything would go smoothly. The aroma of coffee poured around them, and he quickly scooped cream cheese onto a bagel and made the perfect breakfast for the beginning of the day.
”It will. I just wanted to let my favorite campaign manager know that I was doing better,” he teased, grinning at her before taking a bite of his breakfast. While he wasn’t hungry at all, he knew that the bread would help get rid of any other alcohol in his system. The coffee would simply help with the hangover, as well as the Advil he had popped back in the bathroom. He knew the keys of dealing with hangovers. They were the same age, but they were different at the same time. Johnny had been open about his history when she first introduced herself to him and proved that she wanted to help, but she had never been opened about whom she was. There were so many secrets, and while he had pieced things together through the grapevine and google, it wasn’t the same. One day, Johnny was certain that they would take this professional manner out and make it into something personal, like a twisted friendship. Phillipa was a lovely girl and he knew that they could be friends if they wanted to, one day when she was honest with him like he was honest with her. She knew all his dirty little secrets and that was all that mattered when it came to campaigning.
He nodded in response, ready for the interviews. They were the same questions as all the others, some more focused on what he could do for the city and some based off his personal life. His sister had come up a few times, as well as his public relationship with Bailey, and he answered them honestly. He just never mentioned his vices, instead opting to keep them a secret to those who only knew him personally. ”Okay. Are they with talk shows or are they with the news channels?” Because of his campaign, the type of interviewers depended on his answers. Talk show hosts would get the charming and funny ones, while the others would get the most serious and necessary ones. Perhaps there would even be an interview for the newspaper, he truly did not know. Johnny just did what Phillipa told him to do.
”She’s good. She’s not really used to being around the cameras, so I try to keep our outings down to a minimum. But I’ll check her schedule for the event, and I just took her shopping, so we have so matchy match things. I had to do a little bit with her style, or lack thereof.”
He finished his coffee and finished his bagel in a couple of bites before grabbing his coat and keys. ”Are we driving or walking?” he asked, opting to places his keys in his pockets anyways. ”And is there anything I should or shouldn’t mention on these interviews today?”
NOTES he wants to be friendsss |

"I'M YOUR ONLY CAMPAIGN MANAGER," SHE POINTED OUT WITH A SMIRK. SHE WAS THANKFUL FOR THE LIGHTENING OF THE EMOTIONS IN THE ROOM, AND SHE VISIBLY RELAXED. SHE WASN'T COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT TOUCHY-FEELY SUBJECTS. SHE NEVER TALKED ABOUT HER FATHER'S MURDER OR HER SLAVERY BECAUSE SHE WANTED THEM LEFT IN THE PAST. SHE KNEW ABOUT JOHNNY'S PAST, AND SHE CONSIDERED IT TAME COMPARED TO HERS. WHAT HE HADN'T TOLD HER HIMSELF, SHE FOUND OUT THROUGH OTHER METHODS. IT WAS HER JOB TO KNOW THE GRITTY DETAILS OF HIS LIFE SO SHE COULD HIDE THEM FROM THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW. THAT WAS HOW POLITICS WORKED. WHILE HE WAS AN HONEST POLITICIAN - AND SHE VOWED TO KEEP HIM THAT WAY - SHE DIDN'T WANT HIS DRUG USE AND ALCOHOL ABUSE MARRING HIS GOOD NAME.
"THE FIRST ONE IS A TALK SHOW, AND THERE'S A MAGAZINE THAT WANTS TO MEET WITH YOU LATER," SHE INFORMED HIM, RUNNING HER FINGER DOWN THE PAGE. "THE MAGAZINE IS ONE OF THOSE TEEN THINGS. THEY'LL PROBABLY END UP ASKING YOU WHAT TYPE OF UNDERWEAR YOU WEAR. WHO KNOWS," SHE ROLLED HER EYES WITH AN AMUSED SNORT. SINCE HE WAS THE YOUNGEST CANDIDATE ON THE ROSTER, HE APPEALED TO THE YOUNGER PEOPLE IN THE CONSTITUENCY, WHICH MEANT HE HAD ENTERTAINMENT SHOWS AND MAGAZINES INTERESTED IN TALKING TO HIM WHEN OTHER CANDIDATES DIDN'T. PHILLIPA TOOK FULL ADVANTAGE OF THIS FACT AND PITCHED HIM IN A WONDERFUL LIGHT FOR THE 18 TO 24 YEAR OLD VOTERS.
AS HE INFORMED HER THAT HE'D TAKEN BAILEY SHOPPING AND GOTTEN THEM MATCHING CLOTHES, PHILLIPA RAISED AN EYEBROW AND LOOKED SARDONICALLY AT HIM. "YOU BOUGHT MATCHING OUTFITS?" SHE ASKED, A TINT OF INCREDULITY IN HER VOICE. "SERIOUSLY... YOU'RE LIKE AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE. DO YOU HAVE MATCHING CATHETERS TOO?" SHE SMILED INNOCENTLY, HER NATURAL SARCASM SHOWING THROUGH IN HER JOKE. ALTHOUGH SHE DIDN'T CONSIDER THEM FRIENDS, SHE WAS MORE COMFORTABLE AROUND JOHNNY THAN SHE HAD BEEN WITH ANYONE IN THE PAST THREE YEARS OF HER LIFE. SHE DIDN'T DO WELL WITH MEN FOLLOWING HER TREATMENT WITH THE RUSSIANS, BUT JOHNNY WAS HER AGE AND HE MANAGED TO MAKE HER FEEL AT EASE. PART OF IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS IN A RELATIONSHIP SO SHE WASN'T THREATENED BY HIM. SHE FELT NO NEED TO IMPRESS HIM, AND SHE COULD 'MOTHER-HEN' HIM ALL SHE WANTED. SHE WAS AN ONLY CHILD, SO SHE HAD NO SIBLINGS, BUT SHE IMAGINED JOHNNY WOULD MAKE A GOOD BROTHER.
HIS QUESTION BROUGHT HER OUT OF HER DAYDREAMING, AND SHE GATHERED THE PLANNER AND SLIPPED IT BACK INTO HER BAG. "THERE'S A CAR ALREADY WAITING OUT FRONT. IT'S HOW I GOT HERE," SHE MENTIONED, BRUSHING HER BROWN HAIR BACK OVER HER SHOULDER AS SHE WAITED PATIENTLY FOR HIM TO RETRIEVE HIS KEYS. AS THEY WALKED FOR THE DOOR, SHE BEAT HIM THERE IN HER HASTE AND EXITED INTO THE HALLWAY. SHE WAS A NATURALLY EXCITABLE AND ANXIOUS PERSON FOLLOWING THE THREE YEARS WITH THE RUSSIANS, AND IT WAS HARD FOR HER TO CONTROL HER IMPATIENCE.
"CONSIDERING THE VENUES, I SUGGEST ALLOWING THEM TO ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR LOVE LIFE. BRING UP BAILEY AND HOW AMAZING SHE IS, AND HOW MUCH YOU CARE ABOUT HER. MENTION THE MATCHING OUTFITS TOO JUST FOR GOOD, SAPPY MEASURE," SHE TEASED, SMILING AMUSEDLY TO HERSELF AS THEY ENTERED THE ELEVATOR AND BEGAN TO RIDE DOWN TO THE GROUND FLOOR. "LET THEM ASK YOU THOSE CUTESY PERSONAL QUESTIONS, AND GET TO KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE ON A PERSONAL LEVEL. LEAVE THE PROFESSIONALISM TO THE NEWS SHOWS."
AS THE ELEVATOR PINGED OPEN AND THEY ENTERED THE LOBBY, SHE DUG INTO HER BAG AND WITHDREW A SMALL FILE FOLDER WITH SEVERAL SHEETS OF WHITE PAPER. "HERE ARE SOME POTENTIAL QUESTIONS THEY COULD ASK YOU. THEY'RE PRETTY LIGHT FOR THE MOST PART. HONESTLY, THEY MIGHT NOT MENTION YOUR CAMPAIGN A WHOLE LOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF WHAT THEY ARE. JUST GO WITH THE FLOW AND BE YOUR USUAL, CHARMING SELF."
THEY EXITED THE APARTMENT BUILDING, AND PHILLIPA ALLOWED THE BODYGUARD TO OPEN HER CAR DOOR FOR HER SO SHE COULD CLIMB IN AND WAIT FOR JOHNNY TO SEAT HIMSELF. "THAT SHOULDN'T BE HARD FOR YOU," SHE POINTED OUT, REARRANGING HER BAG AND HER NECKLACES AS THE CAR REVVED TO LIFE AND TOOK OFF DOWN THE STREET. "MENTION WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO FOR THIS TOWN. THE SELWYNS NEED THAT RUBBED INTO THEIR FACE," SHE POINTED OUT, HER TONE LOW AS SHE CAREFULLY CONCEALED HER TRUE DISGUST FOR THE CRIME THAT OWNED BOSTON. |
