it's a very grim title to the opening of the life of vienna blithe day, yet it still holds true to this very day. she came into the world with a bang, quite literally too. thirty year old charlotte day, freshly married to alexander day, had been grimly anticipating the birth of her daughter for the past six months. not the full nine months, because due to her use of drugs and consumption of alchol vienna turned out be a preemie baby. vienna thought she would be cool and turned herself upside down during the birth. an emergency c-section had be performed and charlotte had her stomach ripped apart to save a child that she no desire to even hold in her arms. alexander, thirty five and successful, was more than overjoyed to cradle and coo at vienna. the first picture of the newly united day family was bittersweet.
un-motherly love
don't think for a moment that vienna even had the sort of structure in her childhood that a mother would provide. charlotte was already bitter towards her infant for leaving her with a hideous scar form the c-section. charlotte was creeping up in the age ladder but had latched onto her beauty, still posing for shoots in the more racy magazines that england printed. alexander frowned up her choice of work but now had something else to focus his time on. charlotte didn't even address the baby by her name, which alexander had chose since charlotte was looking at the infant with an upturned nose. mommy is a word that has never once passed through the lips of vienna. a string of nannies and constant checkups from her father was the sort of system that vienna was raised through. charlotte is someone that vienna has silently come to hate.
a terrible toddler
vienna wasn't the worst out of the toddler lot in rotherham, england, but her mum would swear up and down that her child had a bit of the devil inside of her. charlotte didn't seem to understand that all young children had an incurable amount of curiosity. when vienna was learning to sit up and the all of the basics of life charlotte had a fit. the first time she screamed at vi was because she had been toddling her large head around, trying to sit up, and had smacked her head on a priceless vase. vi cried loudly and charlotte only screamed louder. yet charlotte continued to wonder why every time she would scream to get vienna to stop she seemed to be immune, continuing to rifle through her mum's shoes or grab for the fine china. vienna only found her mum as a bother and carried along with her adventures, her favorite being tried to ride the large family mastiff. as she grew older she would find charlotte's fits highly amusing.
a caged bird can't sing
alexander was out most of the time, his attention focused the various horse racing tracks and other equine related businesses he had inherited from his father. the day name almost died out completely, but the lively alexander day had been able to revive it. but without her father around it was figured that charlotte would be left in charge of vienna, who had sprung up from a teeming toddler to a fussy child. instead of being curious now she was restless. everything in their manor had been overturned in her explorations from younger years. charlotte had kept her home whenever the day family was invited to any social gathering. vienna was ignorant of the bonds other elite girls were forming, assuming they were all as lonely as she. she would tug on charlotte's clothing, scream out her name, and urge her to take her anywhere. no such thing ever happened.
school girl days
do you think that vienna went to one of those exclusive, expensive private schools? you are completely right. she had the little brooch fastened around her neck, the plaid skirt, and navy socks. it was in private school that vienna learned that life was nothing but a game. her outlook on life had been rainbows and candy puking unicorns up until the age of nine. the girls were young but their vicious girls were already set in their mind. having her opinions chewed up, back stabbed murderously, and deceit occurring before her very eyes had to happen before vienna realized she either had to step up her game or be washed away in the other girls competition. one girl, marley, scarred vienna enough with her ruthless ways that she became vienna's reason to propel herself higher than everyone else. only eleven years old and vienna had already been broken by the world. isn't the same song that every high class girl sings to the masses?
red-light district
in the back alleys of rotherham no one would have figured how many strumpets owned the streets when the sun was overtaken by the sky. honestly, vienna had never imagined she would become apart of such a scene. this was all to be blamed on that horrible girl, marley. she was two years older than vienna, fifteen but thinking she was twenty. her parents were too busy ripping around the world, which left marley with an unstructured life. vienna was pulled along with her, even though she was thirteen and decently pure. marley had the assumption no one was considered a woman until they had sexual interactions, something that she shoved on vienna with wicked delight. vienna could never be outmatched, so triumphantly she lured in an older man and walked over the line to a world of sin. the memory disgusts vienna, physically making her sick to her stomach. it's the one choice that she regrets the most.
a kindred soul
world of her adventures circled around quickly, making their way to charlotte, who devoured the gossip and digested it upon her husband. immediately, vienna was pulled from the school, arranged to have a tutor set up at home, and virtually cut off from all worldly relations. huffy and discontent, she fussed continually but never pulled any big tantrums. she actually carried around a great deal of shame for her actions and vienna dealt with such by wallowing silently as a consequence. it was in the days of her first taste of house arrest that she met odessa irwin, another high class girl who was struggling through a similar situation to her own. she was the daughter of one of alexander's colleagues, the only reason that he even approved of their friendship. she was cool, refined, and had a clever wit. odessa was everything that vienna would come to admire. she was everything that vienna wished she could be.
viva la france
charlotte had basically been blurred out of vienna's life. now odessa and the irwin family seemed to have adopted her completely. alexander was pleased with the way that her personality had remolded over the past two years she had been around odessa. as a reward, for her sixteenth birthday he allowed vienna to spend a year in france, as a transfer student along with vienna. the experience was something that she would never forget. with odessa by her side vienna was shown that life could be full of color and enjoyment without anything sketchy added into the mix. odessa urged vi to focus on her school work, bribing her with all sorts of things that only made vi eager to achieve a better state of herself. pleasing odessa brought vienna a satisfaction that would only be puzzling to someone when she tried to explain. though she was only in france for a year vienna thinks back onto the whole year as possibly the brightest time period in her life.
even the greatest fall
vienna only had her high on life for a short period of time, around three years. she had begun to think that she could shift into a simple life where superficiality escaped her, then tragedy had to hit her. odessa was only seventeen, too young to leave the world. dessa had a part of her life sanctioned off from vi that she never knew about. she had gotten herself into some fishy business that she never belonged shoving her nose into. in the end she was found gunned down outside of the irwin flat. seventeen year old vienna couldn't handle something so immense like the death of odessa. she plunged directly into the sort of thing that had been odessa's cause of death. the aching that she had for her best mate could not be described. vienna only felt pain, so much of it. all she wanted to do was disappear, forget that she had ever even existed. the emptiness in her life was cliche but she needed to get rid of it, and fast.
a case of wanderlust
eighteen years old and fresh to the world, a time on her life that vienna should have viewed as an opportunity. she was still in the grim set of mind that nothing would recover after the death of odessa. she had only skimped by with her grades, loosing all faith in any sort of drive she would have to propel her through college. now that she was an adult the funds that her father had set aside for her were not at her complete disposal. she ran away, simple as that. it was the first chance she had to forget the life she no longer wanted to be apart of. she drew a large sum of money, left everything behind, and set to wandering the country. a few times she dipped into serious lows, hanging around the streets in complete desperation. surely, she would have died if outside of edinburgh she hadn't withdrawn another large sum of money because her funds had been running low. the bank alerted alexander immediately of her location and the local authorities detained vienna.
where ever fate lands
rotherham was no longer a place that vienna could remain. though she was nineteen alexander saw that she clearly could not be considered an adult. charlotte wouldn't allow him to admit her to any sort of rehabilitation center, so they turned to drastic measures. someone in the day family, an uncle of alexander's, lived in boston and actually was a therapist. vienna was sent there as a last resort, since alexander so desperately wanted to cure his daughter. she went willingly, but now had turned to being a selective mute. being set in a new place was nothing that made her content. it took her nearly a year to even say anything. so she sat in the spacious house of her great uncle nate, living in her own mind until she felt as if she had rotted. finally, she needed someone to talk to. so she opened up to her uncle and slowly started to form herself back into an actual human.
metamorphosis
there is no way that one can sugarcoat the personality of vienna day. once upon a time she was the girl who would smile brilliantly to your face while some devious plan brewed in her mind. another time she was the teenager who turned her face up to the sun, thankful that she even had another day to look forward. now she is somewhere in between, not quite defined but never leaning fully towards one or another. because of scarring events the way that her personality has shifted isn't exactly the way that she would have ever preferred. now the way that she views others is more shaped because of how odessa left the world and the things that she viewed while taking her own personal tour around the united kingdom.
she now has a glossy stare that she views the rest of the world with. her eyes have taken in the brutality of life and now it is something that she cannot erase from her memory. she understands that people come from all walks of live and even though she cannot relate at least she could sympathize. along with that, she is more aloof than ever before. it isn't that vienna has hardened herself from all of the world. actually, that had been her state of mind before arriving in boston. now she acts slightly detached, acting as if something else that cannot be seen interests her. but really she is observing from afar to try and drink in their disposition and mannerism. people interest vienna more than she would ever admit, considering the more she understands people the more she could potentially grow closer to them.
scars on her heart
she cannot harden herself from the world, no matter how much she believes that she can. the person that she was closest to in the world was torn from her grasp, something that she would never be able to heal from. because of the death of odessa she has become sensitive to the world and has noticed that her emotions are more off kilter. she only wants to have an uncaring view on life, the sort of view that she can take in everything around her but never have any feelings towards it. viennna is horribly mistaken if she thinks that she can become nothing but a shell. she is a passionate person, holding fast to her beliefs and always having some sort of opinion on any given situation. but once again, it goes back to the assumption that if she expresses herself then someone will connect with her thoughts and open up a door to a bond that she could not handle.
through odessa she learned that love was something that actually must be worked out. vienna used to believe that it was just a fairy tale sort of thing that worked out on its own. a realist way of thinking has set over her, with a hint of grimness that she has not been able to shake since odessa departed her forever. vienna has made herself almost completely guarded from people. there is no way that she could try and dump her mess of emotions onto anyone else. it's sort of doing a favor to herself and anyone who wishes to grow closer to her. she will bluntly tell someone that her issues are too great for them to even wish to handle. that is one thing that you can rely on when dealing with vienna. it's never rude, but vi gives the truth when it is asked for. truthfully, she doesn't want to hurt anyone...not anymore at least. pain is something that everyone should believe, that's her thinking now.
a ghost of the past
no matter how great of a wish she has to forget her past it is something that can never happen. vienna has bits of herself infused into everything that she does. her flushing cheeks will randomly creep up on her, caused by a heated argument that she formed in her head. a desire to have a raucous argument will suddenly overcome her when she is sitting in her room, nearly drowning in a choppy sea of loneliness. there is the sassy thirteen year old girl still buried into her fragmented soul, along with the refined young woman who had become more cultured and accepting of the way that life works. just because she has every desire in the world to become some transparent doesn't mean such a thing will ever occur. vienna could never molt off her old feathers, she is stuck who she once was...and still is.
her snappiness is still ever present in conversations. vi will have a snap comment that she needs to insert into the conversation, regardless of how she swore that she would be quiet. when glancing at a person vienna still gathers an opinion that refuses to change until they show her that she should believe otherwise. then there is the smile of vienna day. if there is one thing that she should be remembered for it would be her blazing smile. whenever an idea pops up or she is pleased then her lips part and the radiance of her inner beauty is shown through her smile. piece everything together and weak veil of her former self is presented in a very twisted light. she still finds amusement in light banters with the people who have actually managed to weasel their way into her life. and those people who matter to her are people that she clings to, reluctant to ever let them go.
