you'd have to ask her parents that. they were half-tempted to name her 'jackson' simply because her parents are both artists and love jackson pollock, but thankfully, they refrained. instead, in true hipster fashion, they named their baby girl with two male names just because they could. and that's how ridley's family was built: on loose values and a lackadaisical lifestyle. when ridley was born to jessica and edward pollock, her parents were starving artists living in glasgow, scotland. her mother worked as a museum guide and painted in her off-time, while edward stayed at home with their daughter and worked his butt off trying to become the next jackson pollock. yes, he was a veritable j. pollock fanboy, you could say. he never became a wealthy artist, but he did garner some attention in and around glasgow, eventually landing the family in a pleasant middle class home on the outside of town. as ridley grew older, she developed a love for right-brained activities. she was a natural artist like her parents, and she was a voracious bookworm and history buff. braveheart became her favorite movie - despite how historically inaccurate it was in some places - before she should really watch movies that violent, and she won art and writing contests in school before she ever hit high school. she's always been a likable girl and obedient to her parents. growing up in a loving family kept her stable unlike the kids around her who were overwhelmed with the divorce of their parents or cheating and lying in their families. ridley was an only child since her parents were never able to have children after her, and she grew very close to both of her parents as a result. she also became mature beyond her years from spending so much time around adults. when ridley was sixteen, her father was approached by a wealthy irish businessman and commissioned to do a project. the man was rude and a dirty businessman, the type of person edward pollock instantly disliked. although he needed the money, edward disliked the man and refused to do his best work for him. instead, he copied a classic jackson pollock piece as his commission. although he didn't intend it, unfortunately, this constitutes art forgery. little to his knowledge, the businessman was connected with the irish mafia and instantly recognized the forged painting. he contacted the irish, cluing them in to edward's talent, and they honed in on him. promising to turn him in to the authorities for forging classic artwork, they twisted his arm in to working for them. however, since the selwyns are true irish by blood, they hate the scots out of principle. the age-old race wars never die between the irish and the scottish, unfortunately. kyson and kipper selwyn were no exceptions to this rule, and neither of them approved of a scotsman joining their mafia. however, they wanted to capitalize on the pollock family's natural artistic ability, so they decided to use edward in a way they both approved. he became the master for a lower member of the mob, neil torres. since neil was irish, and an amazing artist, he became edward's protegé, spending most of his time with the pollock family. this was when ridley and neil met, when ridley was eighteen years old and just entering college. their relationship was friendly at first, joking and teasing and overall getting along. because ridley was close to both of her parents, she knew the details of what was going on with her father, and she was fully aware of the tight rope he walked to stay out of prison and to keep his family safe. she found out that neil's situation wasn't dissimilar, forced to work for the selwyns as payment for a mistake his stepmother made. they bonded over their mutual situations with the mob, and soon enough the two were dating. they dated for two years, throughout the turmoil of the irish mafia changing hands and falling apart around connor selwyn's head. ridley stayed in scotland when neil moved to california with the selwyns, but when they came to boston, she moved to join them. she began working as a stewardess as she goes through college to get her master's degree to become a museum curator. ridley knew she was in love with neil - she'd lost her virginity to him, dated him for two years, and wanted to be married to him - and that's when it all fell apart. remember how the selwyns hate the scottish? the trait was passed down to connor as he overtook the mafia following his father's death. he also hated neil, knowing he was disloyal to the mob but coerced into working for them. hating disloyalty, connor has made it a hobby to make neil's life harder than it should be, and that is why he zeroed in on the one thing neil had that connor had never taken from him: ridley. not wanting his mafia tarnished by scottish blood, and wanting to screw with neil, connor tracked down ridley after sending neil off on an out-of-town job. he lied to her, telling her neil had slept with his sister kahlan and he'd been sent away so connor didn't have the temptation to kill him as a result. ridley didn't want to believe him, knowing connor was a notorious liar, but with no word from neil she had no choice. she moved back to scotland and three months later was engaged to a young marine her father had met through an art commission. he was a nice guy, but ridley never loved him the way she loved neil. however, she felt the aching desire to replace him in her heart, so she tried to do so by marrying the marine only nine months after finding out about neil's 'treachery'. meanwhile, neil believed she walked out on him and cheated on him (thanks to more of connor's manipulation). ridley's husband was deployed to afghanistan in the war effort, and the unfortunate news of his death was received several months later. the loss of her husband saddened her, but she never truly loved him the way she loved her first love. she was given his medal of honor posthumously, and she kept it as a token of the potential for a better life. she never truly wanted the perfect picket fence life she would have had with the marine, but it was a simpler time that almost helped her forget what she really wanted: something she could never have. much to her chagrin, after she got a job as a junior curator at a museum in glasgow, she was transferred back to the states to nowhere else other than boston. now, she resides in the town she once lived in with her ex-boyfriend and the irish mafia, and she is trying at all costs to avoid him, but we all know how boston is. you can't avoid the inevitable. |
